C.G. Loretto Small Pottery Vase Jemez Pueblo Caroline G Loretto. This sweet little pot / vase measures 2 3/4” at the widest part at the center, looking down across the top. The top measures 1 1/2” across the outer part edge to edge. The base measures about 1 1/4” across. It is 8 1/2” circumference around the widest part. It is signed on the bottom C.G. LOREttO JEMEZ. There is a tiny bit of paint / finish loss. It is mostly in the black and I face that side to the back in my shelf where it lived. I suppose the artist could touch it up, but it really is not that much of a distraction at all. I love this shape and the firing is impeccable. It really has a glow. Jemez Pueblo artist Caroline Loretto is known for her polychrome pottery. Jemez pottery is characterized by well-formed vessels with design elements that reflect the influence of their Keresean neighbors at Zia as well as a variety of water, plant and animal motifs. Caroline G. Loretto (b. 1953) comes from a family of potters. Her grandmother was Acoma potter, Lupe Aragon. Caroline learned to make pottery from her mother, Cecelia Loretto. Along with her sister, Geraldine Sandia, she is known for her deep polish and fine painting. Her work has been published in Greg Schaaf’s book Southern Pueblo Pottery: 2000 Artist Biographies and Al Hayes and John Blom's book Southwestern Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni. This is the famous spiral staircase in the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe. There is quite an interesting story that goes with this staircase. I wish I could remember it. It has been several months since I was there reading this interesting story, but I will recall the details to the best of my memory. Alright… This chapel was built sometime in the mid 1800's. It had a beautiful choir loft, but somehow no one had thought to build any kind of a way to actually access the choir loft. So… After years of the Nuns praying for God to somehow lift them up onto the choir loft so they could sing, they finally gave in and got a ladder. This led to the obvious problem of churchgoers looking up the Nuns dresses as they climbed up and down the ladder. So… Once again, they turned to God. They're Nuns. That's what they do. One of the Nuns suggested placing an ad on www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKh2CI6T_c0, but they soon realized that the internet would not yet exist for another 120 years. So, they turned back to God. Well, this time, after months of praying, a mysterious man showed up. He said he could build them a staircase. The mystery staircase… After several months of being locked away in the chapel working by himself, the finished staircase was finally revealed. It is truly a marvel of engineering to this day. It has no nails, and notice, there is no center support. It is entirely supported by the spiral itself. The guy had very few tools, and the staircase is built of wood found nowhere near that area. After completion, the guy disappeared without any payment. They tried to track him down to pay him, but he was never found. They considered it a miracle. It's still a mystery to this day. Was this man sent down from God? Jesus was a carpenter. Was this man really Jesus? Will they ever find out who he was? Will he ever return for payment? Find out next week on our next episode!
