So last year, I tried this project with my class and it was a disaster. A few kids got it but most of the projects were a hot mess. I told the kids to just start carving and to think about the overall shape they were leaving behind. They had to focus on the positive space, not the negative space that they were removing, even though those holes were going to be important. What I ended up with was lines and smiley faces carved into the foam...not exactly what I was looking for and not exactly focusing on the positive space. After a lot of thought, I came up with a solution to the problem of freely carving. This is going to sound nuts but we scribbled! We took a sheet of paper that was long enough to wrap around the block of foam and scribbled...big loopy scribbles like this: Next, we outlined the outside shape and at least 5 holes in the middle like this: After tracing, we cut out our template and pinned it to our block of floral foam. Using clay loop tools, we carved out everything that was not covered with paper. After the initial carving, we took off the paper and I showed the class how to carve all the way through, how to make the holes bigger, how to create layers so the surface wasn't flat, and how to carve in behind shapes to make them pop out. We still focused on the shapes we were leaving behind and I emphasized the importance of carving away a lot to create an interesting form. After we finished carving, we smoothed with our fingers and then coated the entire thing with mod podge to get rid of the green dust that was creating a haze in the classroom. Next, we painted the entire sculpture black Finally, we used a dry brush technique to add metallic paint to give the sculpture the look of metal. Here are the results...

Little Sister was asking for this vanity way before this last Christmas. I didn't know at first whether or not to take her seriously. She has been my rough and tough tom boy for the last 4 years...but all of a sudden she wanted to venture into the world of girly things. Of course I waited too long, and couldn't find one that was cute enough OR the right price, until about a month ago. Craigslist...$20.00 It was the {almost} the perfect gift for her upcoming Fancy Tea Party! I know what you are thinking... Why did they paint weird cabbages in the corners?!?! And why does it have the initials for California Pizza Kitchen?!?! I just kidding, I am sure it was part of the Cabbage Patch Kid Movement. Well, that can be (and was) changed! This project shows the stool. I also applied the same techniques to the front drawer, mirror, and I painted the vanity desk surface pink. What you will need: Cute furniture you want to make cuter (solid wood is best) Heavy Grit Sand Paper Primer Paint brush or Sponges (I used 3 paint sponges) Mod Podge Cute Paper Wax Paper Polyurethane or varnish Step 1: Sand It Sand down the surface you want to paint and/or Mod Podge! I used heavy grit sand paper and just made sure that the shiny finish was gone. Bye bye weird little cabbages! Step 2: Prime it As you can see in the picture below, I primed over the surface I wanted to Mod Podge. Two thin coats should do the trick. Now you can get your cute paper and Mod Podge supplies ready! Step 3: Adhere Your Cute Paper A: I thought about tracing the top of the stool onto paper, but I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to make it match up very well on all sides. So I invented a new little trick. First I wanted to see if one piece of 12 x 12 paper would cover the whole stool. It was just right. If your project is too large for one piece of paper, you can easily piece it together. B: I slathered Mod Podge all over the stop of the primed stool. C: Then I smoothed my 12 x 12 piece of scrapbook paper onto the stool. Smooth from the center out to minimize bubbling. D: I then smoothed and bent the paper over the edges of the stool. E: I used my same heavy grit sand paper to "saw" off the paper over the edge. Seems like it would take forever, but it actually went quick. Can you see where I sanded? This was 3-4 strokes over the edge of the stool. Once you "saw" all the way through, the paper will start remove itself. Voila! Can you see how cute it will be!!! Step 4: Check all edges I made sure my edges weren't all loose like this one below. If they are, simply apply more Mod Podge and smooth down. Step 5: Mod Podge Edges and Surface Make sure you allow 20 minutes between coats if you apply more than one coat. Step 6: Let Dry Overnight I allowed my project to dry overnight. I placed the stool face down onto wax paper. Then I applied weight (full paint can) so that any bubbles would disappear by morning. Step 7: Apply Polyurethane I applied 3 thin coats for durability, letting dry 20-30 minutes between each coat. One more night of drying and then my weird cabbage vanity turned into this... I can't wait to see your projects if this post inspires you... Please send pictures of them to me! Cheers,

Ya know, it is becoming habit now where I just want to keep every cake I make, only for a moment though! I mean, I just love these adorable, unique, colorful and even classic cakes and for a brief moment when I finish the order and the details are in place I just want to put it in a glass case and stare at it...then I come to my senses and realize that doing this would be cake abuse, after all underneath all this beauty is one super yummy cake! No really its soo good! Also my favorite part of the cake making process is definitely the faces on the receiving end!...which brings me to the Neon Bowling Birthday cake..! What and adorable little girl who made the BEST face when she saw her cake, I wish I captured it on camera! (unfortunately I was holding this very large, EXTREMELY heavy bowling ball cake!) The bowling ball being crumb coated in buttercream After buttercreamHer mom ordered her cake and said her two favorite things are hot pink and zebra and since they were cosmic bowling I thought making a marble pink bowling ball on a zebra base with yummy edible mini bowling balls and bowling pins would be awesome...and I think awesome is the best word to describe the final cake! And not only awesome but entirely edible!!! The bowling ball was chocolate cake with peanutbutter buttercream and the bottom zebra tier was three layers of golden yellow cake with fresh sliced strawberries and Chantilly cream...yum!!! The day before this bowling birthday cake was an order for an Elegant Black and White Baby Shower cake, this cake is super pretty and can definitely be the centerpiece for any wedding as well. Everything of course is edible from the bow to the ribbon and it was all handmade. The bottom tier is 3 layers of lemon poppyseed cake with fresh raspberry preserves, top tier is 4 layers of chocolate fudge cake with layers of whipped cream and vanilla buttercream, the entire cake is coated in a neat, smooth layer of vanilla buttercream!
Baileigh-Robert-Brandon (The Graduate)-Stacy Robert (Dad)-Brandon (the Graduate)-Stacy (mom)-Me (Aunt Bee)-Deborah (Grandma)-Baileigh (sister) It's that time of year that graduations are taking place all over the country. Among those was my nephew Brandon. With boys being so difficult to buy for, my mama said she was going to give him money. With a little assistance from me, well maybe more than a little, this is how she presented it. A Money Cake. How cool is that? Two hundred brand new, rolled dollar bills, topped with candy. Seriously this might be the easiest cake I have ever made. No baking required, and it would have been fat-free but I just had to add Hershey's Kisses, Lindt Truffles and Hershey's Nuggets. It's chugged full of chocolate's. Deborah (Grandma)-Brandon Mama was talking the other day saying Brandon sure is going have a time unrolling and ironing all those bills. I said, "Yeah, but then he can honestly say he worked for it." Money Cake Supplies: Green Styrofoam Disks-Top: 1 15/16" X 3 7/8"-Middle: 1 15/16" X 7 7/8"-Bottom: 1 15/16" X 9 7/8" 200 ($1.00) new bills, if possible Gold Metallic Ribbon large rubber bands for holding bills in place tape Graduation topper Glue Gun candy (optional) After helping mama with her gift, I came up with a creative way to give Brandon his graduation present from Stone and I. With fifty brand new one dollar bills I began folding them into bow ties. This did take some time. Then I entertwined the bills through the ribbons, thus making the sash. Inspired by Oh! The Places You'll Go, my sister and I made a fun baby shower for our baby sister - FREE printables!
A couple of weeks ago Shay and I were lamenting over the fact that our big kids were heading off to kindergarten (because weren't we JUST pregnant with them?!?!) and decided that it would be a fun idea to host a Kindergarten Kickoff dinner - something really special just for the kindergarteners and their moms. Monday was the night! The dining room at the Ranch clubhouse was closed - so it was the perfect spot for our crazy crew :) We put out note cards - and everyone wrote what they thought each kindergartener was going to grow up to be as well as a word (or two) to describe them. When the cards were filled out, they dropped them into the kids little bags. This is a chalkboard that I made for my classroom - and it is actually a piece of "art" that I bought at a thrift store for about $2. I covered the glass with paper, taped it down and spray painted the frame yellow. After that was dry I peeled off the paper/tape and painted the glass with two coats of chalkboard paint. Easy! On the table, I wanted the kids spots to be super cute and bright, so I bought a package of 12x12 primary cardstock and used them as place mats (I used the same cardstock to create their little nameplates as well). I picked up three Fall garlands at Hobby Lobby and placed them down the center of the table and then brought my faux apples from home to mix in. I was in charge of decorations and Shay was in charge of cupcakes and OMG they were fabulous!!! She had a local mom make them and the toppers are the most delicious sugar cookies ever. And don't even get me started on the icing. They were perfection. I took no pics of the kids eating, but all us mamas had Cobb salads (and yes.... that's my green tea lemonade... hahaha) and all the kids had pizza and fries. On a whim on Monday afternoon I decided to write Class of 2027 on three of the chalkboard signs that I made and have yet to mount on our back fence. I am sooooooooooo glad that I did because.... One of the most unanticipated gifts of motherhood for me has been this amazing group of women that I am blessed call my friends. I was, admittedly, not a "girls girl" in high school and/or college. I have a LOW tolerance for drama and wasn't very successful at finding girls with similar priorities so I just kind of gave up. Fast forward a few years, and what started as a Beth Moore Bible Study at Starbucks while I was pregnant with Luke has blossomed into deep, authentic and long lasting friendships. This group of girls has prayed for my kids before they were born, we've cried with and for each other and have had our fair share of laughs. We hold each other accountable, build each other up and love each others kids. I love that our friendships have fostered great friendships among our kids as well. It was so special to get to send our first batch of babies off to kindergarten with a bang. I have a feeling that 2027 will be here before we know it, and there's no other group of girls I'd rather do all the in between with. Feeling VERY blessed today :)
