Free knitting pattern for a shawl in garter stitch with a kite shape. Use mini skeins or scraps and make your own yarn with the magic knot!
The “Rosy Waves” came about through the magic of Samelin Dyeworks Merino Single Yarn, which grabbed me tight when I saw one of their shop updates. As soon as the yarn arrived at my house, I was off and running. Within 3 weeks, the idea to go with the yarn was born, the shawl knitted, and the pattern written. I hadn’t knit with single yarns in a while and was surprised how much I liked it. Combined with the shawl shape and the catchy and playful stitch patterns, it was a pleasure to knit “Rosy Waves” from start to finish. The shawl has an asymmetrical shape and is knitted sideways and with the following techniques: knitting, purling, increases, decreases. This fun pattern was invented one day when I was showing my mom about Magic Loop. She asked, “what is Magic Loop good for?” I answered that it was especially good for knitting little tiny objects in the round, like glove fingers, armwarmers, and the tops of hats. I said, “Do you have a key? I’ll make it a little sweater to demonstrate!” and the Key Cozy was born. This pattern is a great way to practice Magic Loop and to use up a scrap of sock yarn at the same time. I’ve created a step-by step video tutorial to work through the pattern with you, if you want to make one together! Just follow along with the pattern and the video, and you’ll be busting out key cozies in 15 minutes. Enjoy!

Last year I got myself a Prym knitting mill (small). I haven’t made that many actual things with it yet, apart from a few decorative Christmas wreaths, but I’ve gotten very addicted to turning the lever (or crank as I like to call it) to produce the lovely thick yarn. Here’s what I have learned…

Another beautiful collaboration with Sundara Yarns. This single skein fingering project will enlighten your day and lift your spirits! This shawl is worked from side-to-side using a mesmerizing yarn that subtly reflects light as it moves. As usual, the design was produced from that light deep down inside that drives all of our emotions. It came at a time of inner reflection and thus, I’ve named it Inner Peace. Peace is an energy that comes from within, it is being in control of your inner monster when it makes you feel greedy, selfish, angry or spiteful. It is taking a step back and doing what you can do to make YOURSELF better and no longer expecting others to make it happen for you. Like our knitting, peace is something we have to work at, to fashion with all our might. It is a magic you have to make time for every day and something that will make your world all the more easy to bear. Work on this shawl and imagine your personal inner peace, what does it look like to you and what can you do today to change our world for the better. Peace starts with you, own it! Finished Measurements: 67 inches (167cm) from side to side and 18 inches (45 cm) from top to bottom at deepest point (including fringe). Materials: Yarn: Sundara Yarn Fingering Silky Merino (50% Silk/50% Merino – 150g) – 560 yards (1 skein). Shown in colorway “Snow Clouds”. Needles: US 4 (3.5mm) knitting needles. Gauge: 20 stitches and 30 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch, after blocking. Gauge is not crucial for this project. However, changes might result in a different yardage requirement.
Standard pony pattern: School-age Pony pattern also available here. *** Translations: Danish by Marianne Dutch by Marinka (via Facebook group) Spanish by Lyanne *** A while back I came across this severely awesome pattern, and wanted to give it a go. The only downside being that it was a double crochet pattern, and personally I don't like double crochet for things that have to hold stuffing. Too many holes. Therefore, I (after a certain amount of trial and error, adding a few bits and generally tweaking things around) have reworked it into a single crochet version. Pictures: Male nose and female nose: Earth ponies: Unicorn: Pegasus with closed wings: Pegasus with open wings: Applejack's hat: (Ponies available on Etsy by the way, and custom pony orders welcome) 2013/3/1: If you would like to make these ponies to sell, I'm happy for you to do so! Just please provide a link back here (http://knitoneawesome.blogspot.co.uk/). A donation would also be greatly appreciated (button can be found in the sidebar), but isn't necessary. :) 2013/3/15: Since it seems many people are ignoring my warning about how much of a pain it is to do the corded manes and tails, I've added instructions below. ^__^ 2013/5/28: I've made a couple of changes to the pattern - removed one row from the hind legs, and reworked the open wings. I've also added instructions for crocheted manes and tails. 2013/6/24: Added a pattern for Applejack's hat. 2013/7/31: If anyone wants to translate the pattern, please do! Assembly: (All the positions given are approximate - pin your pony together and experiment to see what looks best!) Legs to body - place the line of decreases to the front of the legs. Tuck in 2-3 rows of the inner edges before sewing to prevent the legs from tilting outwards too far. Make sure the legs are firmly stuffed right to the top. Front legs - front edges attached at the 7th round of the body, back edges at the 15th. Back legs - place as far to the back as possible, so the curve of the upper back legs goes into the curve of the rump. Front edges should be attached at 19th round of the body, back edges at the 28th. Neck to body - broadest side of the neck to the front. Attach the front edge of the neck at the 2nd round of the body. Nose to head - (I prefer to have the head's starting point at the back and cover the finishing point with the nose. Whether this works for you depends on where you'll be placing your nose! Experiment to see what looks best. If you do put the finishing point at the back of the head, it'll be covered by the mane) Stuff the nose, sew to the front of the head. Female nose should be positioned at the bottom of the head. Squish female nose into turned up shape. Male nose should be positioned in the middle of the head. Ears to head - Do not stuff ears, flatten, curve inwards, sew to back of head. Edges should be at the 7th/8th rounds from the back of the head, the back of the ear should be at the 4th round from the back of the head. Neck to head - Stuff the neck before attaching the head. Horn - Stuff before attaching. Place 4 rounds in front of the ears and an even distance between them. Closed Wings - (I recommend attaching the wings AFTER the mane, tail and cutie mark) Attach the front half of the top edge of the wings only. Attach to the sides of the body towards the front, an equal distance between the neck and the tops of the front legs. Open Wings - (I recommend attaching the wings AFTER the mane, tail and cutie mark) Attach rounds 20 - 26 of the main wings only. Attach to the sides of the body towards the front, an equal distance between the neck and the tops of the front legs. Eyes and Cutie Mark - I used felt and embroidery thread. If you prefer, you could also use fabric paint/pens. Straight Mane and Tail - I used thin cords made from yarn. It looks like this: Things to bear in mind before you try this: it takes ages to make the cords, and it takes ages to attach them. The other major disadvantage of using this technique is that you have to get the length of the cord correct before you attach it to your pony - you can't cut them to length afterwards, because the cords would just unravel. (2013/4/5: Thanks to Miek for pointing me in the direction of this, which is pretty much the technique below, and has pictures. ^_^) Cut a length of yarn approximately 6 times the length you want your finished cord to be. Tie a slip knot in the centre, so the ends are even. Then you take the end that you DON'T pull on to tighten the loop, and draw a loop of it up through the loop of the slip knot. Then you pull the slip knot tight. Then take the end you just used to pull the slip knot tight, pull a loop of that up through the loop you just created, then use the other end to pull that loop tight. Keep repeating this, alternating which end you use to pull up a new loop, until your cord is long enough. When you're done, pull both ends entirely through the loop (you only need to pull one end through to secure the cord, but both gives you a neater end), and pull the loop tight. Do NOT cut the ends at this point! Position your cord on your pony, and use a (curved, for preference) needle to draw ONE of the ends through the fabric of the pony, then knot the ends together using a reef knot. Use a needle to draw BOTH ends back into the pony's body. If you're careful, you should be able to pull the knot through to the inside, so it's hidden. Curly Mane and Tail - Crocheted. It looks like this: This also takes quite a while to make, and can't be cut to length afterwards, but is it a lot easier to attach! Leave long tail for sewing Make a chain a little longer than you want your finished curl to be. Turn. Work back up the chain, 3 sc in each chain, until you reach the starting point. Make another chain. Repeat until you have enough for your mane or tail. Sew onto pony. (To make your curls less curly, work only 1 or 2 sc in each chain, rather than 3) Here's a number of other hair-making methods to try, if you'd rather! If you have questions/confusion, please ask! Digital download of my Sahara Wrap Sweater Pattern! The pattern is for sizes XXS-4XL. This perfect for any season wrap sweater is constructed in three main pieces from the bottom up, each worked flat, with the sleeves picked up in the round. I recommend sizing down for this pattern if you're in between choosing two sizes and want a more fitted look. If you want a chunkier look to be worn with something underneath, definitely size up. Measurements (in INCHES): XXS: Bust - 28" - 30" Length (top of shoulders to bottom of trim) - ~14" XS: Bust - 30" - 33" Length (top of shoulders to bottom of trim) - ~15" S: Bust - 32" - 34" Length (top of shoulders to bottom of trim) - ~15.5" M: Bust - 34" - 36" Length (top of shoulders to bottom of trim) - ~16" L: Bust - 37" - 38" Length (top of shoulders to bottom of trim) - ~17" XL: Bust - 38" - 40" Length (top of shoulders to bottom of trim) - ~18.5" 2XL: Bust - 41" - 43" Length (top of shoulders to bottom of trim) - ~20" 3XL: Bust - 44" - 47" Length (top of shoulders to bottom of trim) - ~22.5" 4XL: Bust - 48" - 52" Length (top of shoulders to bottom of trim) - ~25" Materials: - (560) 580 (600) 630 (680) 710 (760) 790 (840) yards of Bulky to Super Bulky (#5 - #6 weight) yarn - US 13 (9.00mm) circular needles with 24" cord or US 13 straight needles - US 13 (9.00mm) circular needles with 16" cord or US 13 DPNs (for sleeves) - US 10.5 (6.5mm) circular or straight needles - US 8 (5.0mm) circular needs with 24" cord (will use for magic loop) or US 8 DPNs - Tapestry/Darning needle - OPTIONAL: Any crochet hook between sizes 5.00mm - 8.0mm Gauge: 10 stitches x 14 rows in a 4"x4" (10cm x 10cm) square The skill level for this pattern is a confident beginner ready to learn/practice simple decrease stitches and picking up stitches along edges. I would not recommend this pattern as a first project, however, if you are feelin' good about your abilities, I think this could be a first sweater project... but maybe make some coasters and scarves first. New! as of 6/19 2022, here is a video demonstrating the kinetics of the method illustrated below. A bit over a year ago, I posted my version of Judy's Magic Cast On, which is very similar to the traditional version except that I start on the bottom needle. My original post is here. Then sometime after that, I re-engineered the first step, to make casting on easier and to make the end result neater. In the meantime, I also got some more practice using Adobe Illustrator. So I now present to you some updated illustrations of this excellent provisional cast on brought to you by the extremely clever & creative Judy Becker. In the illustrations below, blue indicates the working yarn, held with the thumb and wrapped over the top needle. Red indicates the tail, held with the forefinger and wrapped over the bottom needle. Starting position: Position the 2 tips of a circular cable pointing to the left, and wrap the yarn around the bottom needle like so. (This will become your first cast on stitch.) Hold the working yarn with your thumb. Hold the tail with your forefinger. Step 1: Cast on the first top stitch. Bring the working yarn up behind the bottom needle and in front of the top needle. Now swing your hand down behind the needles, as shown by the arrow. This will bring the working yarn over and around the top needle. The result will look like this. You have now cast on two stitches: one on the bottom needle, and one on the top needle. Step 2: Cast on the next bottom stitch. Bring the tail up in front of the bottom needle and behind the top needle. Step 3: Cast on the next top stitch. Bring the working yarn up behind the bottom needle and in front of the top needle, just as you did in Step 1. Swing your hand down behind the needles... ...and you will have two stitches on each needle. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have cast on the desired number of stitches. Then you can continue to knit with your working yarn.

I-cord is one of those knitting tools that make me happy I learned to knit. I realize it's not everyone's favorite thing to knit, especially when one is called upon to knit 3 feet of it, TWICE, when making bag handles, but I really like it. I like the way it starts out flat and then becomes 3-dimens
