Upon the very threshold of this historical sketch we find ourselves quite destitute of early public records for Swan's Island. For over half a century from the settlement of this island until its organization as a plantation no municipal records were kept. But we are fortunate that H. W. Small saw purpose in bringing to light many private family records, old deeds showing what lots were occupied by the pioneer settlers; and written mutual agreements, which seem to have been often the result of arbitration on any disputed point where different claims to land conflicted with one another.

Hunter Davis in front of his log cabin with homemade fiddle, his rifle, and snow shoes on cabin. Greenleaf H. "Hunter" Davis was a hermit hunter and trapper of Shin Pond. In 1843, Davis, a young man of 26, is reputed to have accompanied Henry David Thoreau for several weeks in the Katahdin Woods. He celebrated his 98th birthday May 6, 1915.

The cover of the premium list for the Maine State Agricultural Fair, held Sept 5-8, 1910 at the State Fair Park in Lewiston. The fair was sponsored by the Maine State Agricultural Society, which began holding a state fair annually in 1855 and rotated them to venues around the state until building a park in Lewiston. Premiums were offered for various types of livestock, horses, apples, implements, dairy products, and bees and honey.
