Malacca: Port city in the modern Southeast Asian country of Malaysia, founded about 1400 as a trading center on the Strait of Malacca. Also spelled Melaka.
After four and a half hour bus ride from Singapore, I got to Melaka (Malacca), Malaysia. Melaka (Malacca) is famous for its cultural heritage. All major groups of the modern Malaysia are represented - the Malays, the Chinese, Indians, Europeans and Baba and Nyonyas (Peranakans - mixed race between Chinese and Malay). Now Melaka (Malacca), along with George Town in Penang, is one of Malaysia's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Melaka (Malacca) Sultanate Palace shown in the photo is now a cultural museum. The original palace was burnt down 500 years ago. This beautiful palace is one of the most impressive pieces of Malay architecture I saw in Malaysia.

Made wealthy by the booming trade that passed through its ports, Malacca was living large at the turn of the 16th century, and it was not very long before envious eyes turned their attention to the thriving city, ushering in an era of European colonization. Painted by our friend Sherman, a second-generation Chinese-Malaysian who has a shop on 2nd Street between Heeren and Jonker, this poster depicts Malacca during the Portuguese occupation, which lasted from 1511 to 1641.
