\"Stunning... The intelligent, cerebral plot finds contemporary parallels in Euripides's tragedies, Jacobean dramas such as The Duchess of Malfi, and Tennyson's poetry. The devastating ending shows just how little the troubled Mariana knows about the human psyche or herself. Michaelides is on a roll.\"—Publishers Weekly, starred review\"A deliciously dark, elegant, utterly compulsive read—with a twist that blew my mind. I loved this even more than I lovedThe Silent Patient and that's saying something!\"—Lucy Foley,New York Timesbestselling author ofThe Guest ListFrom the #1New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient comes a spellbinding tale of psychological suspense, weaving together Greek mythology, murder, and obsession, that further cements “Michaelides as a major player in the field” (Publishers Weekly).Edward Fosca is a murderer. Of this Mariana is certain. But Fosca is untouchable. A handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike—particularly by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens.Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge.Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students? And why does he keep returning to the rites of Persephone, the maiden, and her journey to the underworld? When another body is found, Mariana’s obsession with proving Fosca’s guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships. But Mariana is determined to stop this killer, even if it costs her everything—including her own life.
This Tuesday through Thursday, the Society for Historically Informed Performance presents the ensemble In Stile Moderno in “Un Concerto per Barberini,” featuring composers in the employ of Cardinal Francesco Barberini, the smooth, cultured, and cautious 17th-century Vatican insider. Musically, Barberini is best known as a prominent patron of opera just as opera was being invented — historically, as Galileo Galilei’s defender during the astronomer’s Vatican trial for heresy. But Barberini’s deftest accomplishment was surviving Roman Catholic politics, which, at the time, were, to describe it ecumenically, Byzantine.
The duke of malfi measures 5.75" x 2.5 x 8.25". One of the greatest classic theatre tragedies from English history is the story of the Duke and Duchess of Malfi. This story of a beautiful Duchess who absconds with a common lover, leaving the Palace of Pleasures. A classic and famous story. Also a story that appealed to masked participants of the yearly Venetian Commedia dell' Arte season which lasted for months... Our sculptured masks represent an age when elegance and sophistication mixed with a need for secrecy and pretense. The 'Bouffon' or Jester is an unusually rich and decorative representation of one of the most ubiquitous of Venetian Carnival characters.

The Duchess of Malfi is a Jacobean revenge tragedy written by English dramatist John Webster in 1612-1613. It was first performed privately at the Blackfriars Theatre, then later to a larger audience at The Globe, in 1613-1614. Published in 1623, the play is loosely based on events that occurred between 1508 and 1513 surrounding Giovanna d'Aragona, Duchess of Amalfi (d. 1511), whose father, Enrico d'Aragona, Marquis of Gerace, was an illegitimate son of Ferdinand I of Naples. As in the play, she secretly married Antonio Beccadelli di Bologna after the death of her first husband Alfonso I Piccolomini, Duke of Amalfi. The play begins as a love story, when the Duchess marries beneath her class, and ends as a nightmarish tragedy as her two brothers undertake their revenge, destroying themselves in the process. Jacobean drama continued the trend of stage violence and horror set by Elizabethan tragedy, under the influence of Seneca. The complexity of some of the play's characters, particularly Bosola and the Duchess, and Webster's poetic language, have led many critics to consider The Duchess of Malfi among the greatest tragedies of English renaissance drama.
A new volume of the greatest revenge tragedies of the seventeenth-century stage These four plays, written during the reigns of James I and Charles I, took revenge tragedy in dark and ambiguous new directions. In The Duchess of Malfi and The White Devil, John Webster explores power, sex, and corruption in the Italian court, creating two unforgettable anti-heroines. In The Broken Heart, John Ford questions the value of emotional repression as his characters attempt to subdue their desires and hatreds in ancient Greece. Finally, Ford's masterpiece 'Tis Pity She's a Whore explores the taboo themes of incest and forbidden love in a daring reworking of Romeo and Juliet.
