Best to use the above measurement and measure a similar garment to compare please. I have a no return policy thank you. Please Note : Any accessories used in the picture is not included its purely there to show how the outfit could be worn or a decorative object. My intention is always to be honest and open. Vintage is Vintage and Antique clothing is well Antique :) and I would say anything before 30s should be treated with care and worn with care. Mostly these items will be fragile especially 20s silk or Edwardian very fine Muslin. These items can not handle stress and will tear easily. Should be bought a size bigger where possible or should be a little loose on. Vintage or antique. No matter how new it is, it will always have an element of oldness ! It will not look brand new modern clothing from the shops. There may also be minor flaws. I always try to list the flaws but some may get missed for example if the dress is just lace alone it’s easy to miss the odd break. Or miss tiny pin hole that can only be seen when worn or held up to light ! Note to consider when buying Edwardian or victorian blouse : *The sleeves may not be long to the wrist but more of a 3/4 length *Some may fall longer in the body or more of a crop style! *Buttons also may vary in shape and size on the same blouse, these blouses are old and would have lost buttons along the way therefore is common to see. *The blouse may look big and loose but the shoulders or opening of the arm will be small. *If an item is marked Xs but looks loose and big it really is XS on the upper body. Shipping : All UK postage will go tracked signed for second class. All overseas customers is responsible for their duty and customs (please contact me for any questions you may have) I will do my best to help. Thank you :)
Exquisite Antique 19th Century Maltese Silk Lace Bolero/Vest This is a beauty but I have always loved Maltese lace. The first time I have had a top. My pictures do not do it justice because my space is so limited. I have the measurements on the pictures and the arm hole is 21". It is in beautiful condition with just the areas I show where the stitching needs re-stitched. Not holes, just loose threads.

Maltese bobbin lace made by my lovely mother Adelina from the Maltese Islands, it is made by a number of threads which are wound upon an elongated wooden bobbin or spool. A special long cushion called trajbu in Maltese is used as a base for the lace creation. The pattern is drawn up on parchment paper which is then placed at the top of the trajbu. Pins are used to keep the threads in place while the lace is worked. Every inch of lace takes weeks to create making this product a fine and prestigious one.
1800s lace collar of Maltese lace lovely creamy vanilla ivory. center front 4", 15" across bottom, 30" neck from end to end.
Description: A rare antique linen Maltese lace collar or capelet. C389. Maltese lace is a type of bobbin lace that comes from the Isle of Malta, and it has been made there for centuries, mostly of silk, and only rarely of linen. This collar is one of the finest Maltese lace pieces I have seen - the detailing is exquisite, and the linen thread that was used to make it extremely fine. There is a defined collar with little stars that continues down the front opening. At the end of the opening on each side is the characteristic Maltese lace motif. The body of the collar is a very detailed work of stars and leaves. The edging is made with wide scallops made up of alternating Maltese cross and large star motifs, with a delicate bobbin lace edging along the very edge. The collar is 17" around the neckline (no closure at present), and is 7" wide to the bottom of the first Maltese cross at the bottom of the front opening. The width at the shoulder and at centre back is 10". Now for the really exciting news - the collar is in superb, unused (NOS) condition with no signs of wear whatsoever. It has general overall yellowing from storage over many years, and it would brighten from a gentle soak to the characteristic pale ecru of the Maltese lace. It is nice in the darker ecru as is. This lace dates by provenance to the turn of the century, and is a rare and beautiful capelet or collar with some motifs that are no longer used in this type of lace.. $125

An elegant pair Engageantes or false sleeves made from Bedfordshire lace very much in the style of Maltese lace. The wrist flounces are reminiscent of Honiton with pretty rose like motifs. These are on lovely clean condition, there is a separation at the wrist which will need attention but it is clean on the ‘seam’ so an easy job for a skilled hand. 7 inches around the wrist 10.5 inches around the top of the sleeve 12.5 inch total length

Although needle laces have been made on the islands of Malta and Gozo since at least the 16th century, bobbin lace was only introduced to the island in the first half of the 19th century. It is associated with Lady Hamilton Chichester (Lady Harriet Anne Butler, died 1860), who in the 1830's introduced lace makers from Genoa (Earnshawl 1982:107). She was the wife of George Hamilton Chichester, 3rd Marquess of Donegall (1797-1883), a prominent member of the Anglo/Irish aristocracy. Lady Hamilton Chichester worked with Sarah Austin (1793-1867), who was a prolific translator from German to English and mother of the famous explorer and Middle Eastern specialist, Lady Duff-Gordon. Sarah Austin visited Malta with her husband, the English legal theorist, John Austin (1780-1859) in 1836. Their aim was to help local women with new sources of income, namely silk lace that was becoming more and more popular with fashionable ladies as part of their crinoline dress ensembles. Close-up of a part of a Maltese lace collar showing the characteristic Maltese cross and small leaves (early 20th century; TRC 2007.0645). For more information, click on the illustration.Original Maltese lace is characterised by the plaited strands or braids, the small, plump leaves, sometimes known as ‘wheat ears’ or ‘oats’ as well as the Maltese cross, which has four, equal length arms. Furthermore it generally shows a geometric overall design. Apart from the Maltese cross, all these characteriscs are shared with original Genoese lace. The cross was apparently added in the 1830’s by Lady Hamilton Chichester because Genoese lace was very similar, but by adding the Maltese cross it became quickly identified with the island by locals as well as the tourists who were buying this type of lace (Earnshaw 1982:108). Early 20th century postcard with women producing bobbin lace on slanting lace pillow. Gozo, Malta (TRC 20217.1419).The use of a thick, soft silk made it relatively easy to produce items of lace as well as making them less expensive than the finer silks that were often used for lace making. One of the first times this type of lace was exhibited was in the Great Exhibition in London, in 1851. In the Malta section to the catalogue to the Great Exhibition, for example, there were references to lace collars, black lace collars as well as knitted laces (1851:165). Queen Victoria seems to have been a great admirer of Maltese lace, and she is said to have submitted a sample of lace to the Exhibition of Industries, in London in 1881. Her statue in Republic Square in Valletta, the Maltese capital, shows a shawl being displayed over her lap, and the garment may represent a sample of Maltese lace. It is also alleged that samples of Maltese lace were sent to China to be copied; this story may reflect a modern reality. Whether or not she preferred Maltese lace made of silk or of linen remains a moot point; since the late 19th century, linen was widely used for the lace, although linen lace was mostly used for larger pieces, such as table cloths and curtains. Cross of the Order of St John (Maltese cross).Maltese lace continues to be made to the present day, although not on the same scale as in the 19th century, and, to some, of much inferior quality, although deep into the 20th century lacemakers were a common sight when visiting Golzo. In 1996 a lacemaking programme was set up at the University of Malta - Gozo Centre to promote the production and quality of Maltese lace, and in 2000 the Malta Lace Guild was established. It publishes a newsletter with infomation of developments of Malta lace production, on Malta and abroad. There is also a Koperattiva Ghawdxija tal-Bizzilla u Artigjanat, which is a cooperative producing handmade Maltaese lace. Finally we want to mention the social enterprise called HAJJA, which uses Maltese lace making as a healing tool to improve people's health. Lace collar in ecru silk and with its characteristic Maltese crosses and wheat ear patterns (early 20th century; TRC 2007.0645). For more information, click on the illustration. Bedfordshire lace Maltese bobbin lace was very popular from the mid-19th century onwards and was copied in Britain, for example, with the newly ‘invented’ Beds Maltese (Bedfordshire Maltese) lace form, a style of bobbin lace that was somewhat disapproved of at the time by lace traditionalists (Earnshaw 1982:108). It soon went out of fashion, partly because of the costs of its production. Another derivation, so it seems, is Hainault lace, which resembles Bedfordshire lace and which was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in southern Belgium.
