Reserved and graceful, Martine Franck’s poise could be shattered by a shock of full-throated laughter. Her husband, fellow photojournalist Henri Cartier-Bresson said “he fell in with her the first time he saw her laugh”, recalls curator Agnès Sire. This week a retrospective of Franck’s photography will open the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson’s new building in Paris’ Marais district, turning the spotlight on a woman who preferred, in life, to remain discreetly in the background.
