Ao se mudar para a casa do pai, o pastor Marvin Pentz Gaye Sr., os conflitos entre ambos se tornaram constantes. A última briga foi fatal. Um dia antes de completar 45 anos, o artista morreu com um tiro de espingarda disparado pelo pai. A arma foi presente do filho. Gaye nasceu em Washington em 2 de abril de 1939. Como a maior parte de seus contemporâneos da Motown, começou cantando em igrejas. O pai, que tocava piano, era severo e batia no filho. Nos anos 1950, formou o quarteto vocal The Marquees. Após o fim do grupo se tornou músico de estúdio. Depois de conhecer o dono da Motown, Berry Gordy, lançou o primeiro single em 1961. Ele ficou 15 anos na gravadora.
