146/365 - May 26, 2011 Here's a look down Mattoon Street in Springfield, MA. This area was the city's hub in the 1920's. Around the corner from this location, was a Rolls Royce dealership during that era. The Rolls Royce Springfield Silver Ghost was manufactured in Springfield, MA for about 10 years. I learned a bunch about this history at a meeting I was at in Springfield yesterday. It was amazing. "Springfielders produced many of America's "firsts," including the first American-English dictionary (1805, Merriam Webster); the first gasoline-powered car (1896, Duryea Brothers); the first successful motorcycle (1901, Indian Motorcycle); America's first commercial radio station (1921, WBZA); America's first UHF television station (1953, WWLP); and most famously, the world's 2nd most popular sport, basketball (1891, Dr. James Naismith.) As much as this 365 project has frustrated me, it really has challenged me to not let the camera sit and collect dust between vacation trips to the "more picturesque" spots.
