Overlooking the ocean, 12 massive sculptures bear silent witness to history, inviting interaction and contemplation. Galician artist Manolo Paz created the granite sculptures in 1994, inspired by the Neolithic menhirs, or standing stones, that are found throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Visitors come to view the sunset, the Torre de Hercules, the Atlantic Ocean and the city framed by square holes cut through the monumental stones.
Partiamo dai primi. I MEN-HIR. ...continua... 114cm x 38cm x 10cm Thought to be from 4,200 ybp to 3,000 ybp, so within the bronze age. The nose is in relief. The eyes and mouth are in a schematic 'column' and do not align with the 'disk' space for the head. A shoulder strap keeps a large blade close to the chest : a blade tool for trimming wood, small scale land clearance, removing reeds and shoots for basket making, picking at a hive, cutting meat and other pastoral necessities. Even today, few outdoor activities exist without a trusted and well kept blade. The two lower lines are for a belt and there are no obvious leg lines. The arms and hands are poorly represented. Arms are elements with so much motion that they were perhaps difficult to contain within the language of schematic boundary. This, coupled with no expertise in 'essential line'. may have resulted in the poor and even insecure rendition. The surface of the stone in the above photograph has been treated to enhance lines with the real statue-menhir surprisingly polished. This statue menhir is currently part of an exhibition in the Montrozier archaeology space. There are some lines that may come from an agricultural machine. Earlier copper age statue menhirs from the south and the west of France contained more schematic information within a 'classic' menhir form. These are reminiscent of the Portuguese and Iberic bell beaker statue menhirs. The above Dunenque statue menhir contrast with these earlier monolithic anthropomorphes by its symmetry and quality of surface finition. The late Neolithic sites of Tell Brak (5,000 ybp in today's Syria) predates both of these categories, but within a credible distance of inductive time. The Tell Brak monoliths had heads sculpted, distanced noses and hole point eyes (and even 'owl eye' sockets). These new 'codes' may have taken their time to spread west influencing Italian statue menhirs (Lunigniana), French (Dunenque) and Iberic statue menhirs (Longrovia) - the passage of inductive time, witness and practice. The later evolution into disc stèles may also be mused. Contact between Portugal and the Biscay was via a trade route that followed the Tajo river north east walking on to the Ebro river east / west and Cantabria trade routes and thus into France. Syria linked via littoral and Alpine routes... Dunerque was a 'bout de monde' in between. Syria and the fertile crescent were in advance for neolithic domestication and sourced new varieties of selected grains and animals to greater regions. Examples either traded through chains of handshakes or passed on via human migration. The preferred iconography of the peoples with 'modern' food innovations may have also carried through within neolithic packages. In this way, trade along the coastlines (north or south of the Mediterranean) might take new forms of statue menhirs from one side of the sea to the other at a faster speed than overland. New codes and forms may 'seed' in the Iberian peninsula, before 'climbing' north to cross into France. It is not impossible to imagine a meeting of 'Chinese whisper' induction, where the Dunerque statue-menhir remembers its back route to arrive next to a different tribe who have taken only the 'owl eyed' element from the same source but via an overland induction : innovations of line from the same source, but with radically different finished morphologys. Here a 'Rodezien' tribe (some manifestation of the Treilles people) with their Dunerque menhir, 'might' find themselves adjacent to the simpler and shorter owl eyed mehire-steles of the Herault's Fontbouisse people. Here a first neolithic package may pass in one direction, with another 'package' and interpretations arriving from an opposite. AJM 02/08/17

A single, vertical standing stone; any prehistoric structure consisting of a tall, upright megalith (“huge stone”). The name is from the Old Breton men, meaning “stone,” and hir, meaning “long.” Menhirs occur in all parts of the world where megalithic monuments are known, but they are particularly profuse in prehistoric Europe. Menhirs are difficult to date, but in Ireland and southwest England a few examples mark burials dating from the Neolithic to the Middle or Late Bronze Age. A similar or slightly earlier date is attested for some of the Breton menhirs. In all these areas, a few of the stones bear cup marks. Such a megalith is often isolated, erected by a family or tribe as a memorial stone for some deceased hero or some great event. It may have been a religious object for worship like the American Indian totem pole. Other are associated with dolmens, tumuli, and circles of stones. Menhirs may occur singly, in rows (alignments), or in enclosures (stone circles). Anthropomorphic examples are known as statue-menhirs.
