Boston-based conceptual artist Nathalie Miebach (previously) weaves colorful, complex sculptures using rope, wood, paper, fibers, and data from weather events. Two of the artist’s recent series explore the impact of storm waters on our lives and on marine ecosystems, with variables like wind and temperature (and the harmony of the composition) often informing the rainbow of colors used to translate the data into a three-dimensional structure. The “Changing Waters” series uses data from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System (GoMOOS) buoys as well as from coastal weather stations to show relationships between weather patterns and changes in marine life. Angular, geometric shapes, hard edges, and monolithic constructions. You are either in a Lego set or looking at an example of brutalist architecture. It’s a devise style, with some seeing it as the pinnacle of function over form, while others just think of endless, soulless commie blocks, with rotting, exposed concrete.

Ever since I started my research internship at the KNMI (Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute), this salad has been part of my go-to lunch if I have the ingredients on hand. It is super simple to make with only 5 ingredients, it takes less than 10 minutes to prepare, and it is really tasty too! And it will even taste better if you let it sit for a while, so the flavors can really mix together.

Sastrugi are sharp irregular grooves or ridges formed on a snow surface by wind erosion, saltation of snow particles, and deposition, and found in polar and open sites such as frozen lakes in cold temperate regions. But this really isn't the point. More fun is to just drop the word randomly into conversation, showing everyone you might know stuff. Example: The chicken was a bit too sastrugi, so I didn't eat a lot of it. Result: Wow, I didn't know you lived in Zurich. For academics and serious amateurs, when having a conversation about winter sport, squint and look toward the horizon, muttering, "sastrugi." The benefits will be obvious. You're welcome!
As much as we admire the stunning images and incredible data we get from observatories, the buildings themselves are works of art in their own right. It's hard not to admire them as they sit high above cities and nestled into mountain peaks. What a view.
