Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! If you recall, Wednesday I shared my finished Star Album with you during the Club Scrap blog hop. Today I am back to show you how to make one of your own! These albums are the perfect vehicle for displaying favorite collections of pattern paper or colors. When the album is displayed fully open as a star the papers become the center of attraction with your story coming to life along the outside edge (the lo's in the album). Just to refresh, here is the album.... and this is what it looks like once it has been completely opened up. So, let's make one! Supplies: 8-10 sheets of 12x12 Cardstock I used Club Scrap Lake Kit for the example but any cardstock will work. Double Stick Heavy Duty Tape Chipboard (for cover) Ribbon Bone Folder Instructions: 1. Determine how many points/pages you would like in your star album. I chose 7 but you could use 8 or 9. If you use 7 pages when the book is completely open each of the pages will be fully open and the second and third layers of paper will be displayed nicely. The individual pages won't lay flat when opening the pages one by one though. With each additional page you add the individual pages will be closer to laying flat when viewing like a conventional book but when displayed like a star they won't be as full as the 7 page lay-out. 2. Once you decide how many pages you want to use cut each sheet into 3 pieces - 4" x 12" 4" x 10" 4" x 8" Keep the cut off pieces - those will make great embellishment pieces for the actual lo's. 3. Fold and score each of the pieces in half. 4" x 12" - score @ 6" 4" x 10" - score @ 5" 4" x 8" - score @ 4" 4. Separate the individual folded sheets into 7, 8 or 9 piles (depending on how many pages/points your album will have). I know some of my piles look funky (with two greens in each pile) but a few of them are patterned inside. 5. Take a pile of pages and apply really sticky adhesive tape on one end as shown on the 12" and 10" pages. Remove the tape from the 12" piece and secure the 10" page directly over the 12" page. Remove the tape from the 10" piece and adhere the 8" piece on the stack and set aside. Repeat this process for each stack of pages. 6. You should now have 7 (8 or 9) sets of pages for your album. Since the pages in your book don't lay down flat like a conventional book once assembled I have found it is easier to embellish, stamp, and ink your lay-outs at this time. This is what I have done above. 7. After you have finished decorating your pages it's time to finish assembling the book. Apply a strip of the really sticky tape to the 12" and 10" pages on each stack. Peel off the backing on the 12" page and adhere the 10" page. Peel off the backing from the strip of adhesive on the 10" page and stick down the 8" page. Repeat with each of the remaining stacks of paper. 8. You will now have 7 (8 or 9) nifty little 3 layer pages as shown above... 9. Arrange your pages in the desired order. 10. Flip the first 3 piece page set off the stack of pages. Apply strips of double stick tape (I ran out of the red so I'm using the kind with white paper backing now) as shown to the 2nd set of pages. Remove the backing paper and adhere to the first set of pages. Next, flip those two sets of pages over and add strips of sticky tape to the 3rd set of pages; remove the backing paper from the tape and stick it to the first two sets of pages. Repeat this process until all of the page sets have been stuck together forming the body of your mini star album. Here is what my stack of page sets looks like once I finished step #10. 11. Time to create the cover pages. Cut 2 pieces of chipboard 4.25" x 6.25"; cut the last piece of cardstock in half. 12. Adhere the chipboard to the back of the cardstock; miter the corners as shown. 13. Crease and fold each side flap, apply a strong adhesive and secure. This is one of the covers - repeat steps 12 & 13 to create the second cover piece. 14. Wrap and tie the ribbon around your bundle of pages. 15. Adhere strips of the stick tape to each of the cover pieces, remove backing paper and stick over the ribbon to the front and back pages of the bundle of pages. Press to ensure proper adhesion... 16. Embellish the front cover as desired and you're done! To display the album as a star, open the book completely so the covers meet and tie the ribbon in a bow to hold it open as shown above. Once you add photos you'll have a beautiful display piece to keep or give as a cherished gift.

Star books are such a great way to display atcs or photos, and they're not as difficult to make as you might think. Here's how to make a colorful 4 1/2" x 6" book like this one, perfect for spring-themed atcs or whatever you wish. Supplies Needed 2 pieces of sturdy matboard: 4 1/2" x 6" 2 pieces of cover paper for matboard cover: 6" x 7 1/2" Black pages, 7 pieces cardstock: 4 1/2" x 12" Small red filler pages: 14 pieces of cardstock: 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" Red pages, 7 pieces of cardstock: 4 1/2" x 9" Cream pages, 7 pieces of cardstock: 6 1/2" x 8" Beads for spine decoration (optional) 2 yards waxed linen thread At least 2 feet of ribbon for closure PVA glue Glue Stick Double Sided Tape Tracing paper Let's start with the cover. Using a glue stick, glue your matboard onto the wrong side of the cover paper you have chosen, and trim the corners as shown. Carefully fold the sides in and glue securely to the back of the cover. Decorate the covers any way you like. I used paper flowers and images from The Lovely Garden collage sheet from Alpha Stamps. Now, let's fold the first of your pages: the black pages and the small red filler pages. Fold the black pages in half so that you have 7 folded sheets measuring 4 1/2" x 6". Fold the small red filler sheets so that you have 14 folded sheets that are 4 1/2" x 1 1/4". These are the pages that will actually be sewn, with the red papers inside the fold of the black page. Make a template for your stitching out of tracing paper. Mark the top and bottom of the pages, and make four marks for the holes you will punch. The top and bottom holes (end holes) should be about 1/2" from the edge of the pages, and the two center holes should be about 1 1/2" from the edges. Use this template to punch holes in each of the seven nested signatures with an awl or needle punch. Each signature should have one black sheet, with two of the smaller red sheets nestled within. Thread your waxed linen with two needles, one at each end. Take the first signature (one black page with two red pages inside) and thread the needles from the inside to the outside through the two center holes. Then cross the needles and thread them back through the center holes towards the inside of the signature. Bring each needle back to the outer spine of the signature through its closest end hole. Now add the second signature. Thread the two needles through the corresponding end holes to the inside of the second signature from the outside spine, and pull the thread fairly snug. On the inside of this signature, thread each needle through its nearest center hole to the outside of the spine. On the 2nd, 4th, and 6th signature, add beads if desired. Thread them through one needle and then thread the other needle through the beads before going back through the center hole to the inside of the signature. Then, thread the needles back out through the end holes as before. Continue sewing each set of your seven signatures in this way. On the pages that don't have beads, just cross the threads before going back through the center holes. When you have added the last signature, you will end up with the needles on the inside of the pages in the center holes. Tie the threads off with a square knot. Whew! That was the most tedious part. When the book is closed, you will have six sets of black pages that are back to back. Using a glue stick, carefully glue these six sets together, so that each set makes one page. Set the book under some weights to let it dry. Meanwhile, fold your remaining pages. Fold the red pages in half so that you have seven 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" pages. Fold the cream pages in half for seven 6 1/2" x 4" pages. Fold the 6 1/2" side of the cream paper up two inches to make a pocket. This page should now be 4 1/2" x 4". If you wish, round the corners of the pocket with a corner punch. Then, using a thin doublestick tape, affix tape to the outside edges of the pockets where they will fold up. Attach double stick tape to the outside edges of all the red pages where they will affix to the black. Attach the taped outside edge of each red page to the outside edge of a black page. Make sure the edges line up well. Press firmly to adhere. When all the red pages have been attached, go back and attach the outside edge of the cream pages to the edges of the red pages in the same manner. Once all your pages are affixed, attach ribbons to the outer sides of your book block with double stick tape. Glue the covers to the book block, using PVA glue. Make sure that the covers are lined up and the edges are affixed well. Put the book under heavy weights, and allow that glue to dry! Now you have a beautiful Star book with a beaded spine. Decorate the inside pages and fill it with your favorite little works of art. You can change the dimensions of the cover and pages to make any size book. Here's one I made with triangular pockets and extra embellishments to hold "Comedians in B&W" atcs.

Here's a tutorial on how to make the star book that Wynneth and I made at a recent class at Violette's This photo is of the original star book used in class and was made by FLORENCE for Violettes Materials: 6 pieces each of three different coloured card ...... 12" x 6" (for the cover/innermost pages), 11" x 6" for the middle pages and 10" x 6" for the pages which will be decorated). For the purposes of this tutorial I used Pumpkin/black/deep yellow in that order. Score all pieces down the centre and set aside. Paper trimmer - to cut card to size Scoreboard and stylus or bone folder Score tape (the strongest double sided tape known to man!!! though Stix2 is probably a close second) Wet glue Scissors Pencil Ruler Embellishments - themed, we used a selection of Halloween stickers from Doodlebug Designs Inc Quickie glue pen Small pair of magnets (positive and negative) Glossy Accents Taking your first piece of 12" x 6" and a piece of the 11" x 6" place a length of score tape down the outer edge only, of the 12" x 6" card. Carefully line up the outer edge of your 11" x 6" card and stick down. Now repeat at the other end. Do this with all of your 12" x 6" and 11" x 6" cards. All my own work!!! The outer and centre card pieces attacahed Why not attach the smallest card at the same time? You are leaving the smallest sized card for decoration BEFORE attaching using the same method. Once you have decorated your smallest sized card pieces, on the inside only, and have punched holes and added stickers, stamping, photos and any other embellishments .... you may want to consider whether you wish to have open tops to any of your embellished pages (for inserting tags or hidden journaling too) - you will see that one of my own pages does indeed have a tag sticking out so you will obviously have only glued the paper/card down on THREE sides, leaving the top unglued for the insertion of your tag. Florence's pages forming the star book THIS PAGE HAS A TOP OPENING AND A TAG Once you are happy with the decoration and consider your pages finished then you are ready to attach your innermost pages to your "star" pages, using the same method (score tape to the outer edges only). Your pages will NOT lie flat once this is done. To assemble the star book. Start with the front cover and first page and place score tape around the outer edges. I always find it useful to just peel back the first 1" or so, leaving the "tail" facing outwards as it makes positioning easier and peeling back is a doddle! Ensuring your pages are aligned (particularly important with the bottom, as the book will not stand evenly otherwise), once you are happy with the positioning then gradually remove the tape with one hand, pressing firmly with the other. Repeat until all of your pages have been attached, making a book - DO NOT adhere the last page to the front cover, this is where the magnets come in. The cover of the finished book Not trusting anything other than glossy accents for this job, it's going to take a while to dry but you may well think it worthwhile in the long run! Leave the magnets attached to one another and glue to your front cover, close to the outer edge and about centrally top to bottom. Once dry then form your booklet in to the finished star, apply glossy accents to the other half of the magnet and press firmly in to place on the back cover, keep it firmly closed with a bulldog clip (or similar) to prevent the booklet pulling apart during the drying process and VOILA! you have your star book. Sounds complicated? It's really not, not once you really get in to it. The class was three hours from start to finish but our card pieces were already cut so I would allow four hours.

Hi everyone! Today I have a fun project on the Sizzix blog. It's a star book that is also a pop-up book! This is something I've been dreaming about since I first got my Pop 'n Cuts dies - there is something so magical about a book or card that is interactive! I may or may not have used every Tim Holtz Christmas/winter die that I own! This is one of those projects that I could still be happily working on. There are so many ways to embellish these pages. When I have nothing but time on my hands, I would love to make one with even more detail. I love that this book can stand on its own and be displayed. It's like five little dioramas to look at! I made a quick little video so that you can see more of how the book works - static photos just do not do pop-ups justice! This giveaway has ended. Thanks so much for all of your wonderful comments! Oh yeah, now for the fun part!! I just happen to have a couple of extra dies from the amazing Karen Burniston to give away! You might remember the Opening Door die from another Pop 'n Cuts card I made a few weeks ago. The little wreath is adorable and I used it a lot on the PNC star book. I also have Karen's Flagpole with Lantern and Sign strip die. This is the die I used to cut the banners that spell out Noel. You get so many different elements on this strip - it's one of my faves! I also have a bunch of the Talking Tags from Sizzix to share. Check out this video from Sizzix on how to use these cool tags. I think they're amazing! All you need to do to win is leave a comment on this post. PLEASE make sure you include your email address! I'll leave this open until Sunday night and announce the winner on Monday. Good luck! Star books are such a great way to display atcs or photos, and they're not as difficult to make as you might think.
