Store Front Facade with Old Bag Lady. 1/12 Scale Facade. Some of my very early work.
Today I'm sharing this framed miniature front door. What I like about this miniature project is that it also doubles as decor as it can be hung on the wall. Check out the video at the bottom of this post for the full run through of how I made it. But first, here's a few details. I created the brick wall by using a handmade stamp made from a rubber. I used this technique a lot when I was at uni, as you can see here. I added some 3D elements to give the piece some dimension, like the plants on the doorstep. These were made using little bottle brush trees which I trimmed to give a flat side and painted a more realistic colour. I think these would make great presents to celebrate a new home or commemorate leaving an old one. They'd be easy to personalise and you could even write the house address on the mount.

This fabulous c1950s Tri-ang Queen Anne Dolls House has just gone up for sale on KT Miniatures. It is the version that has a turquoise coloured finish with stencilled foliage over the front and is in 1/16th scale. The dolls house is accessed via the front, which opens right up to reveal two rooms upstairs, and a large room downstairs divided by a central staircase. The staircase can actually slide out completely to make one large downstairs room if so wished....very clever idea! All the floor and wallpapers inside are original. Even though the flooring papers are a little worse for wear in places, it is still refreshing to have them at all, as they are often missing. The worst patches can easily be disguised by strategically placed rugs or carpets. The windows and doors are made of plastic and it is brilliant that they too are present, as due to their fragility in young hands, they were often broken and then lost forever. Well actually, they are all present except for the right side lower window, but the previous owner very cleverly made a wooden replacement. It has been so well done that I didn't even notice at first! It is extremely refreshing to have the two half front doors present, as it is rare to find this model dolls house these days with them still present. The reason being is that these plastic doors were extremely fragile in young hands, and the little plastic notches top and bottom that kept them in place and allowed them to swing open, would often quickly snap off. And although this has happened to the left door, as you can see from the photo, the previous owner taped it so that it could swing open. Now the tape probably does need replacing but this is easy to do. The roof is original and can be removed if necessary. Is also nice to have both chimneys present, although one of the chimney pots is a replacement. So there we are.....this Tri-ang dolls house rarely comes along these days in such relatively good condition. Could make an ideal present for a vintage dolls house collector and would look fabulous filled with vintage 1/16th scale dolls house furniture. CLICK HERE TO VIEW Please note that due to the particular fragility of the plastic windows and doors, this has to be collected only from me here in Thame and is not available to be posted. I spent some time building a front door for my cabin project this weekend. I spent a little time, mainly on Pinterest getting some ideas. The white paper cut-out was my original concept from back when I started the project. I started by cutting a piece of basswood the size of the door and cutting the window opening out. This cabin was a kit, so the door openings are not a standard size. Then I cut the side pieces and the cross member and glued them to the door on the front and back. I scored lines to give the illusion of many pieces of wood instead of a solid piece. Then did a dry fit, and glued it all together with craft glue. I tried a new product "gel stain" available in the craft paint section. You paint it on, let it sit for a while, then wipe it off. It is water based and cleans up pretty easily. It was a lot easier than oil-based wood stain. I glued on some metal straps that I had picked up a craft show and added some mini-faceted beads to give the illusion of iron rivets. Then coated the entire thing with a clear coat. It is a little more glossy than I would normally do, but live and learn. These are the pieces of wood that I cut for the frame. I set the door inside, and used pins for hinges at the top and bottom, then glued the frame in place. The pieces on the paper are for the exterior trim. Here is the door glued in place. I have ordered a door latch and will update after it arrives. The rocks around the front of the cabin are still a work in progress. I was originally going to try some stained glass for the window, but I think I will stick with clear. I have also been debating painting the trim to match the windows.
