A woman is reading a letter. A priest is depicted in the left inset. Kuchi-e are frontispieces of books, especially woodblock printed frontispieces for Japanese romance novels and literary magazines published from the 1890s to the 1910s.

Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908) was born on March 6, 1866 in Tokyo. When he was 13 years old, his father sent him to the printmaking school. He was also apprenticed to a ceramic painter.
