For next month's issue of Rural Missouri I did a story on Mark Hann of O'Fallon, who has taken his hobby of model railroading outside to the...
The Castle Farms Model Railroad is one of the largest model railroads in Michigan. Come marvel at the more than 70 trains chugging on over 2,500 feet of track!
I'm looking for suggestions on a small logging scene....HO scale.....for an area that is L-shaped 36" x36" x 24" wide. What kind of buildings/equipment would you suggest, and is there usually a main line going through the scene with a couple of spurs.....? Thanks......! The layout consists of 389 feet of track and 259 trestles and encompasses three independent operating loops. A freight or passenger train runs on the lower outer loop while a train hauling cars filled with clay for the brick factory operates on the lower inner loop. The upper loop simultaneously carries a logging train taking logs to the lumber mill.
Gardening and model railroading; these are two of our favorite hobbies, and they are being combined by many to create garden railways. A number of botanic garde
Yesterday we had the pleasure of visiting a railroad garden layout at Emerald Height Retirement Community. The layout was created 10 years ago from the founder of the Puget Sound Garden Railway Society who is still in the group today, and maintains the railroad part of the garden. It has gone through several garden groups
The term G-scale is something of a misnomer, since its proportions can vary from 1:30.3 to 1:32, depending on country and manufacturer. The following track plans can stimulate your own garden railroad.
Small HOn3 track plans - My track plan was determined by two things. The first was the space available and second, an operational railroad.

Gary and Jonette Lee have created a garden railway in their Corbett backyard with 700 feet of track - each tie cut and laid by hand - and surrounded by lush, small-scale landscape. The Lees' yard is one of 13 elaborate garden railways in the greater Portland area that will be on the Rose City Garden Railway Society tour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m on Saturday, June 20.

Model railroaders are reputedly among the most frugal hobbyists. So why spend good money for details when you can utilize some very common household items?

". . . Model railroading as a fine art? This subject is rarely ever suggested, but it should be. Non-peers think of model railroaders as “the nut in the basement,“ or “the guy who doesn’t have the good sense to pick up the trains after Christmas” or“over-aged adolescents still playing with their toy train set.”
Mea Culpa.... I completely forgot to finish off my series of layout photos from the 2012 Grand Rapids NMRA Convention. Skip's layout is the Arcadia & Betsy River RR, a two level standard gauge timber oriented layout. As soon as your walk in the door to Skip's layout you are greeted by this dramatic gorge scene: 📷
Ideas to elevate your railway
It might not look like much, in fact it may look a little odd, but this will be the first locomotive I've installed ditch lights on. Here the SMD LED's are fished through the shell, and they've been wired to the DecoderBuddy (one of the very early ones). The ditch light mounts are Details West DL-229 parts, currently having the canopy glue holding the lenses in drying. 📷

Posted this on my Free-moN "Shoo-fly in Sonoma" thread, but thought it's own thread might be better for sharing, search, and archival purposes. I've been building & planting a vineyard, using small stranded wire, ceramic stucco paste, polyfiber and AMSI ground foam: 📷 📷 Here's the "How-To" video: Hope this comes in handy, and I look forward to see how others have scratched a vineyard!

Most model railway enthusiasts are content with housing their tracks in the spare room. Not Eric Marshall, 68, from Bagby, near Thirsk in North Yorkshire, who has transformed his front garden into a miniature railway.

Perhaps you have a scene or series of scenes on your layout that have not aged well. They may be covered in dust or just generally need a little touch up. You’d be surprised how easy it is to clean up…
Model train water scenery has grown to become a staple of many of the winning model railroad layouts at exhibition events. The contrast between beautiful mountains split by a beautiful river stream or even dock water scenery tends to add so much character to any model train layout.
