High quality print of an original, one-of-a kind pen & ink drawing. It measures 8"x10" with a small white border, and it is signed and titled by myself — the artist — in the back 💜😊 --- 🐋🦭 Mother of the Deep 🦈🌊 Sedna is one of the most powerful and prominent goddesses in Inuit mythology, as she is the Goddess of the Sea, keeper of all the sea animals, and ruler of Adlivun, the Inuit underworld. Worshipped across the arctic regions of Canada, the United States (Alaska), Greenland, and even the Siberian province of Russia, Sedna is known by many other names in various indigenous languages such as Sanna, Sidne, Nuliayuk, Taluliyuk, Arnapkapfaaluk (‘Big Bad Woman’), and Nivikkaa (‘Woman Thrown Backward Over The Edge’). She is the Mother of the Sea, the Mistress of the Sea, and depending on what form she takes, she is also sometimes referred to as the Old Woman Who Lived In The Sea. 🐳🦭🐟🌊 While there are many versions of her story across the Arctic, one myth tells that Sedna lived very contently and comfortably with her mother and father, as her father was a very skilled hunter and so she always had plenty of food and warm furs to wear. Although Sedna was very beautiful and many Inuit men asked her parents for permission to marry her, Sedna refused each and every one of them. Even when her parents insisted it was time for her to marry she refused to follow tradition and obey them. This was until one particular Inuk, claiming he was an excellent hunter, visited Sedna and promised her that he would always provide her with an abundance of food to eat and furs for clothing and blankets. He and Sedna soon married, and the man then took her to his island where she quickly learned that this man was actually not a man at all, but a bird. What’s more, she also learns that he is not a skilled hunter like he claimed to be, and so starving, cold, and feeling utterly deceived, Sedna begged her father to rescue her and take her home. When Sedna’s father Anguta arrives, he kills the birdman and then he and Sedna begin their journey home in his kayak. But the birdman’s friends discover what they had done and wanting to avenge the birdman’s death, they flap their wings above the kayak which results in a huge storm. The waves crashed over the small kayak, and, fearing that the kayak would fill with water and he would drown, her father threw Sedna into the icy Arctic waters. Sedna held on tightly to the edge of the kayak in an attempt to save herself, but her father, fearing that she would tip over the kayak, cut her fingers off one by one. And so, while Sedna began to sink to the bottom of the ocean, different sea creatures were born from each of her severed fingers. Each mutilated finger became the magnificent and majestic seals, walruses, whales, narwhals, and fish of the deep sea. Once arriving at the ocean floor, Sedna became the half-woman, half-fish Goddess of the Sea and Queen of Adlivun — the Underworld or Land of the Dead of Inuit myth and legend — who held sacred dominion over all creatures of the vast, deep blue sea. She is said to hold sea creatures entangled in her long unruly hair, where only she alone decides how many animals can be slaughtered by the Inuit people for food. Sedna is willing to provide for the people if they accept her rules: for three days after their death, the souls of her animals would remain with their bodies, watching for violation of Sedna’s demands. They would then return to the Goddess, bearing information about the conduct of her people. If her laws were broken or her animals were disrespected, Sedna’s hands would begin to ache and she would punish humans with sickness, starvation, and storms. Only if the people righteously provided offerings and songs, and an angakok (shaman) visited Sedna in a trance in order to alleviate her pains by combing her hair with a bone comb, would the sea creatures return to the hunters so they could, in turn, feed their families. Beyond the concepts of good and evil, Sedna is a feared, yet highly revered and respected Goddess of the Inuit people. Like many other Dark Goddesses or Wise Woman figures of myth and folklore from around the world, Sedna is a powerful feminine figure who puts human dignity and integrity to the test. Like many women, including myself, she comprehends betrayal and deceit at the hands of people she deeply loves and trusts. Inherently, to some degree, the anguish of broken trust seems to be part of the human experience, and the pain of it can catapult us into greater understanding of our true Self — including the deep, dark and cold regions of our psyche that too often go unexplored — and implores us to stand in our power, demand respect, and set healthy boundaries for our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. Although Sedna’s tests and trials may seem cruel in the moment, they are, in fact, at their core, making the people — making each and every one of us — worthy and aligned with our own greatest good, for the true integrity of our soul can only truly be proven in the midst of adversity or, perhaps, when we think no one will bear witness to our behaviour. This integrity can be examined on a micro-level in the daily minutiae of our own individual lives, or on a macro-level in the way large corporations around the world go to great lengths to hide how they exploit and harm our planet. Like any dark, Crone-like figure, Sedna asks us to live the values of respect, integrity, wisdom, and love — not merely because of her consequences for not doing so, but because it is the right thing to do. Because it is the only way to create a world that is more peaceful, just, and fulfilling for all — human and animal alike. 🌎💙
Watercolor Art prints Yemanja is the goddess of the Ocean, emerges from the waters moving her arms with the rhythm of the waves, carrying the waters to bathe all humanity, cleansing us from all that is not good. Dressed in blue and white translucent foam with crystalline reflections from the moon and stars, ever so enchanting, beautiful, sensual, fertile. She is the mother, the Femenine Principle of Creation, in her we find comfort and protection, her arms open ready to receive us and to nurture us. Through the force of her waves she creates the movement required to change, to purify. To her we call when we need courage, support, clarity, cleansing. The print is authenticated, dated and signed on the back. Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/josefinagrunwaldt/

From the beds we wake up in to the buses we take and the offices we work at, it often seems like we live on a man-made planet. But the natural world is all around us, all the time. It's just we build such intricate hideouts, we sometimes forget about it. So let's refresh our memory.
