To begin our series of Wildflower Wednesdays, we’re highlighting a flowering plant that you can find everywhere from city gardens to mountainsides. Mountain laurel (kalmia latifolia) is a shade-tolerant North American evergreen shrub that produces delicate clusters of mesmerizing flowers. Mountain laurel blooms in the spring and the color of its flowers can range from white to pink to deep rose. This photograph was taken in late June, on a trail within Moshannon State Forest in western Pennsylvania. Mountain laurel is the state flower of both Pennsylvania and Connecticut and is frequently found in oak-hickory forests throughout the eastern US.
