Using double duty songs for more than one concept is perfect for teachers that only see students one time a week!
This usable set is a sample of materials in my Kodály-Aspiring Recorder Method. The method contains a teacher manuel, student book, and fingering chart posters. It does not include slideshows or worksheets. This sample includes a how to, one Ta TiTi/Sol Mi folk song to teach including a teacher page, a student page, a slideshow practice set and worksheet for the folk song "No Robbers". The Recorder Method that uses what the kids already know! Solfege & Rhythm! A perfect way to introduce instruments into a Kodály-Aspiring Classroom. Download the previews of the method to see the full teacher and student books. How this recorder method works: It seems like there is always one. There is that one student that can’t play the recorder pieces because they can’t hear how it is ‘supposed to sound’. They are frustrated, and you are frustrated for them. This method uses what they already know: solfege and rhythm syllables. Focusing on introduction of the fingering instead of the note name helps students understand by using a known concept instead of the idea of note names which can be very abstract for some kids. This system lends itself well to a ‘belt’ system too if you wish. Each belt would be at the completion of a concept/set of concepts. Some concepts are grouped together, others appear separate. The rhythmic concepts are not emphasized in this system, however the first few are introduced with the solfege to review. Some rhythmic elements are not introduced in sequence to ensure that folk songs deal with only the solfege elements that have been introduced already. All solfege elements are practiced with 5 songs, rhythmic elements do not always have 5. Before students play each song, make sure they have been introduced to every concept in the song. I’ve included other musical elements such as repeats, anacrusis, ties, rounds, and time signature changes. Many of these do not happen until the later concepts when the children are more comfortable with the mechanics. In addition to being relatable concepts, this system also relies on widely known folk songs. This is also to help those kids that just need to hear it to play it as a beginner. Students can still practice at home once they have sung the songs in class but this must occur before they bring it home to practice. This method doesn’t deal with moveable do, or key signatures so that students can truly relate the solfege they know to the notes they are playing. Due to Do being fixed at C, low la and low sol do not appear but will be introduced in level 2 of the series when key changes and chromatics are introduced. If you’ve prepped them that do moves with other activities, it won’t be an issue later on if you don’t get to level 2. Also, if you work in district that utilizes fixed do in upper choral classes, they’ll have an advantage! Fingering charts do not include the letter names, but rather, a line for kids to write it in once they have learned it. Download the preview to see the Teacher Manual and the Student Book. The NIH has a great unit on genetics using characters from Harry Potter. I wanted the practice pages to be more like guided notes so I made a few formatting changes. These notes follow along with Lesson 2. The entire unit is available to download at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/harrypottersworld/education/lessonplans/science.html During the lesson, students had the genetics terms matching activity on their tables so they could add to their graphic organizer. All you need is Skittles, a small bowl and water! There are two different experiments--do one or both depending on your students' needs and abilities! Experiment 1: Students place Skittles in a small bowl and record their observations in pictures (one picture at beginning, one after 5 minutes). Experiment 2: Students learn the word "dissolve" and conduct the same experiment in two different bowls, one with hot water and one with cold water, to see which temperature dissolves the Skittles faster. The worksheets come in two forms. The first has words printed in sections of the mandala and the second is without the printed words. Students can use the second version of the worksheet in two ways. 1. For colouring in by referring to the words printed on the first version. 2. Students can create their own mandala worksheets by using the parts of speech codes provided at the bottom of the page. Reference to the appropriate coloured mandala provided in the Answer Key page can be made while students create their own colour by code parts of speech mandalas. All of the worksheets are available for viewing in the preview. Products can be downloaded unlimited times.
