Made for me by a contact in Gael agus Gall, from a description in En vikingemarkedsplads: Ideer til historiske værkstedsaktiviteter, tværfaglige emner og temadage. The case itself is wood, not bone, but I still like it. The three needles to the left are for sewing, the one on the right for needlebinding. Leather specs here.

Handmade in Leeds, UK, these nalbinding needles have been made using re-claimed wood that was destined for landfill so ideal for an eco-conscious person. The type of wood depends on what is available yet the majority of it will be oak. Nalbinding, also known as naalbinding, nålbinding, nålebinding or naalebinding is a fabric creation technique that predates both knitting and crochet. Other might know it as knotless netting / knitting. The wood has all been cut down, shaped, sanded and fitted with a hole before being coated in a raw linseed oil or walnut varnish (depending on the colour chosen). The natural coloured linseed oil needles will be smoother as the oil penetrates into the fibres of the wood and helps resist absorption. The linseed oil is semi-permeable, meaning that it will allow the wood to breathe. This option is super smooth. The darker varnish option is there for those looking for a darker look. As they are varnished, you can feel that extra layer, though over time (through being handled) will become smoother. If you would like your needles to be darker (as shown in some of the other images) please choose this option when making your purchase. Alternatively, you can have a mix. As standard, this set of three includes two needles at 100mm long (a.k.a 4 inch) and one needed at 125mm long (a.k.a 5 inch). If you would like a different length that's fine. Please feel free to send me a message and we can discuss that. If they are similar in length to the sizes above, there will be likely be no extra costs involved :) Despatch time is set to 1-2 weeks as these are made to order and I need time to create them. The Easiest, Clearest Ever Guide Book to Nalbinding! Called Nålbindning in the native Swedish, it is also known in English as nalbinding, nalebinding, nalbindning, naalbinding, naalebinding or needle binding. Nalbinding is an ancient technique used to produce hats, socks, mittens and other woolen goods using a single short needle and lengths of woolen yarn. Although later superceded by knitting, a technique that uses 2 needles instead of one, nålbindning produces garments of a superior quality with stitches that do not run if snagged and a weave that is more dense and therefore easier to felt, providing maximum protection from cold or moisture. It is for this reason that the nalbinding technique was still used until very recently in some parts of Scandinavia. - A4 size 23 page instruction book with full colour pictures throughout. - Step by step instructions in both English and Swedish. - Designed for the absolute beginner to learn this ancient technique. - 4th edition with clear instructions and photos that you can easily follow. - Two different techniques, one from a Medieval find from Lund in Sweden and one from a Viking age find from Mammen in Denmark. - Includes patterns and instructions on how to make wool wrist-warmers, mittens and socks.
