Born in Lima, Peru in 1980, Ana Teresa Barboza lives and works in her native city. She studied painting in the Faculty of Art at Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PCUP). Using embroidery, yarn, and wool, she creates landscapes and other imagery that exists in the space between tapestry and sculpture. Emulating the flow of waves or grass, each piece breaks out of its embroidery hoop and tumbles down the wall upon which it is being displayed.

Exhibiting alongside artists such as Marc Quinn and Michael Craig-Martin in the Guildhall Art Gallery’s largest ever upcoming exhibition, Nature Morte, Cindy Wright is taking the contemporary painting world by storm. Her unsettling still-life oil paintings modernise classical Vanitas techniques to make, as described by the previous director of the Las Vegas Art Museum Libby Lumpkin, ‘arrestingly claustrophobic’ imagery. By juxtaposing domestic objects then rendering them in oils with exceptional skill, she turns the mundane into sensuous and disconcerting imagery that forces viewers to reconsider their every-day.

Since the ancient Greeks, realism has been aspired by Western art lovers, but during the late 1960s and '70s the popularity of highly-realistic drawings reached its peak. Thus, Photorealism and Hyperrealism were born. These perspective drawing genres are still popular, and some artists master their technique so successfully that it becomes hard to tell an oil painting or a pencil drawing from a photograph. Bored Panda collected some of the best examples of this cool art and made a stunning list for you to enjoy.

For nearly three decades, Cuban painter Tomás Sánchez has been painting serene landscapes of calm waters and verdant forests full of towering palms and dense shrubs. Now part of a lengthy series, his realistic works focus on nature’s immensity as they contrast massive waterfalls and miles of endless treetops with a nondescript figure, who often can be found seated or standing amongst the lush scenery. In a statement, Sánchez explained how his practice of meditation informs his work. More

Ecuadorian artist Beto Val alchemizes vintage illustrations into bizarre compositions that blend fruits with fowl and aquatic life with land animals. Using imagery available through the public domain, Val cuts and repositions fins, wings, and scaly talons into surreal creatures: round owl faces peer out from pineapples, autumn leaves sprout from tropical birds, and a rendering evocative of a biological chart displays fish with bodies made of strawberries, brains, and an early, industrial locomotive. The act of seeing is complicated, especially when it comes to the challenges of art. On a recent wander through the Lower East Side, I found myself in three galleries currently hosting solo exhibitions that require a closer look to reveal the details hidden from the first glance.

Elizabeth Colborne never saw the Northwest landscape as a postcard portrait. Dividing her time between the Northwest and New York City, she produced a series of color woodblock prints of local landmarks like Mt. Baker and Bellingham Bay that bring a sophisticated cosmopolitan sensibility to the depiction a region still emerging from the surrounding wilderness. Now, Seattle-based curator David Martin and Bellingham’s Whatcom are offering the first retrospective show of Colborne’s work since her death in 1948.

There is a tough structure and playful approach to still life that underpins Adam Pyett’s paintings. He uses paint to convey a quintessentially Australian aesthetic on subjects as diverse as flowers, found objects and punk rock iconography.
