Sew Fold'n Stitch Table Topper Quilt Pattern
This is a project only a mother could love. Meaning, it's a great introduction to sewing for kids AND these magnets are very entertaining (and safe) for babies. I had a lot of fun with the color combinations and got creative with buttons and ribbon as well. But mostly, they made my fridge a colorful wonderland for the baby which means less scaling cupboards and getting underfoot as I'm cooking! I got the idea from this pin and sort of went from there. The magnet is inside the felt which reduces the strength of the magnet, so these are good for play, not for holding important paperwork! And remember things like magnets and buttons are choking hazards so use strong/thick thread and knot everything in place (or just embellish with embroidery) and supervise baby. Here's what you need to get started: Felt Scissors Pen/Pencil, disappearing ink or not Needle & Thread (I used DMC floss) Cookie Cutters (stencil, etc. or just freehand it) Magnets (from Michaels, JoAnn, Hobby Lobby etc.) Stuffing, batting, fabric scraps, cotton, etc. Buttons and ribbon (optional) Start by tracing your pattern onto your felt. Fold or stack 2 layers of felt and cut out your pattern (to get 2 pieces). I cut a smaller heart in a contrasting color as well. Sew desired embellishments to one of the pieces (the other piece will be the back and doesn't need decoration). I'm going to show how to use blanket stitch to attach the small and large hearts. Start by inserting needle from the back at the edge of the smaller heart. Pull through leaving a 2" tail. Now insert the needle from top to bottom about 1/8" to the right and 1/8" down inside the smaller heart. Pull almost all the way through, leaving a small loop. Insert needle back to front at the edge of the small heart, just above the last stitch... ...And pull the needle through the loop left from the last 2 stitches. Give the thread a tug upward and to the right to tighten. Note: the following 2 steps will repeat to completion. Insert needle front to back 1/8" right and 1/8" down, leaving a small loop... In one motion, insert needle back to front at the edge of the heart and through the loop. Pull taut. Continue this way (needle down inside the heart, needle up on the edge of the heart, catching the loop as you bring the needle up) until you have stitched all the way around. End with needle down and tie the tails in a knot. Now you're ready to attach the front and back pieces! Stack the pieces and rethread your needle. Blanket stitch is slightly different now since we are working on the edge of 2 pieces the same size. See photos. We want the tail (which will later be knotted) in-between the layers, so insert your needle in the back piece from front to back (inside to back?). Pull through leaving a 2" tail. Like this: Insert the needle over and down (diagnoal) leaving a loop as before... Pull through the loop (no need to go back to front like before, since we are working on the edge) Repeat around, leaving a 1" opening. Stuff Slip a magnet inside against the back piece And continue stitching to close. End by inserting the needle to the inside next to the tail from the start. Tie off your tails and push the thread to the inside. Fin. Here are some of the first magnets that I made, before I thought to fill them. Dorky, I know, but they're quick, easy and fun to make and the baby loves them! I would love to know if you make some, and what ideas you come up with! Feel free to post pictures on the Facebook page!
Want to make a woolie pentagon box for your sewing notions? This is a Dodecahedron. (don't say that with a mouthful of popcorn!) 12 pentagons, 30 edges, and 20 vertices (points)! You will need: Lightweight cardboard, cut 12 cardboard pentagon shapes. Cotton quilt batt scraps cut to the same size as cardboard, please cut 13 pentagons, the extra will be for the inside of the lid. Lightweight mismatched felted wools for the faces, cut 12 pentagons, 1/4 to 1/2 inch larger than the cardboard. Lightweight wool or flannel of one colour to use as lining, cut 12 pentagons, 1/4 to 1/2 inch larger than the cardboard. (Check my Etsy Shop...from time to time I will have templates and kits listed) This is my favourite quick method for fusing the layers, Cut pieces of fusible hem tape to the length of a side. Now trim that piece in half lengthwise. Layer the batting between the cardboard and wool fabric. Carefully place trimmed fusing tape on cardboard, fold over the wool fabric and iron. Repeat on all 5 sides. Trim the corners Press again Now press a hem on the lining pieces. Use the cardboard as a template, work around all sides Here are 12 covered and batted pieces with 12 liners ready to stitch. To reduce bulk, trim away the corners on the lining. Be careful not to trim past the ironed hem. Leave just a smidge for stitching. Pin lining to the cardboard side of the wool and batt pieces. Use a neutral coloured thread and make small whip stitches to join the sides. I used Coates and Clark polyester, brown #8360. ***Stop here and decide which shape will be the lid, use the extra, or 13th piece of batting for the lining side of the cardboard*** Lay out the finished pieces I chose the red piece to be my lid. It has batting on both sides of the cardboard. Join each side with small whip stitches. Stitch on the right side of the pentagons. Six pieces joined, place right sides down. Now bring up the sides and stitch one side at a time. (Stop now if you want a bowl!) Add a row around the bowl Keep going all the way around the bowl, using 5 more shapes. The last shape is your lid. This is the piece that has batting on both sides. The perfect spot to hold needles and pins! Not finished yet. Time to personalize and pretty it up a bit. Work a feather stitch, which is an adaption of a blanket stitch, along all the edges. Embroider with one colour, or a combination of thread colours. Add a fob to hold the lid down. I used a bobbin, a woolie strawberry, and a button! You could use one, or all, or any weighty dangle thing of your choice. What will you keep in your Dodecahedron? I will be making wool pieced kits for this project, no thread. I'm playing with the shapes to get just the right sized opening. Let me know if you are interested. Happy New Year! Check my Etsy Shop. From time to time I will have templates and kits available.

At the last meeting of the Embroiderers' Guild, I was given a little project to take home. It was several candlewicking pieces that required only Colonial Knots. I had never heard of that before, so I learned it and now I'll show you! : ) So welcome back to another edition of 'Saturday Stitches' where you watch me teach myself to embroider! you can see all posts by clicking on 'Tutorials' at the very top of my blog A Colonial Knot is a little different that a French Knot. It doesn't make that little doughnut. It makes a good tied knot but wrapping the needle in a figure eight. Check it out... bring the needle up, and then lie the tip over and under the thread like that... Take the working thread and put it across the tip of the needle and then tuck it under again. put the needle back into the cloth, close to where you first came up Pull to tighten the knot a bit and then take the needle right through to the bottom. And there you have it! It's pretty easy. They sure look lumpy and knotty compared the the French Knot. They would work great as pebbles in a small landscape I bet. hmm.... Have a great weekend!
