As far as I know this is the only national forest in our country that is completely unnatural (that is the forest was planted by persons). Few people realize that Nebraska has some forests, many of which were plated by man. Nebraska is the proud home to the origins of Arbor Day. This grove, also known as the Bessey Nursery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Nebraska has a reputation for being really flat and boring - mostly because everyone drives across it on I-80, which is, well, flat and boring. Go West! This scene is from the Saddle Rock Trail, about three-fourths of the way up Scotts Bluff.

This lovely courthouse was designed in Romanesque Revival style by architect J. C. Stitt. It cost the county $19,000, and construction took place on it in 1891-92. In 1990, the structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Frost accumulation on the dormant winter plants makes a neat effect. This photo was taken from my friend Justin's acreage south of Denton, Nebraska.
For much of the year, a lack of water means that the Platte River, which stretches the length of Nebraska, is mostly sandbars with small channels of water. But in the Spring, the snow melts in the Rockies and brings much needed water and habitat for the multitudes of migrating birds that make this area their home, if only for awhile.
