And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us understanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by small means the Lord can bring about great things.1 Nephi 16:29

Nephi says he made his “plates of ore” after finding gold, silver, and copper ore deposits. In pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, an alloy called tumbaga was popular. This alloy consisted primarily of gold and copper, and sometimes included silver. Plates of tumbaga would fit witness descriptions of the weight and appearance of the plates. Tumbaga also had a number of practical advantages over plates of pure gold, while maintaining the “golden” look appropriate for a sacred object.
Sometimes, I get a little jealous of scriptural figures. Sure, they had great and epic battles to face, but they also had great and epic experiences with God. I know their stories are more nuanced than we’ll ever understand. In many ways, the accounts found in the scriptures are meant to teach overarching themes that […]
This painting by Chris White captures the spirit of Nephi, the Prophet from the Book of Mormon. Based on the story in the Book of Mormon where Nephi shows great faith in the Lord even when things go wrong. Based on 1 Nephi 16.
DNA and RNA are the foundation of earthly life. I am thrilled that Lehi’s description of the principles of opposition is so very descriptive of what we now know about DNA & RNA form and function.

During a period of peace and prosperity, the Nephites began to grow proud and set their hearts upon their riches. In this context, Nephi preached “upon a tower, which was in the garden of Nephi, which was by the highway which led to the chief market.” Interestingly, low rising towers, residential gardens, major highways, and centralized markets are all archeologically well attested in ancient America. From his tower next to the highway, Nephi was able to preach to a sizable audience. And in what can be described as an allegorical funeral sermon, he warned them concerning their riches and prophesied concerning the death of their chief judge.
Welcome to Day 1 of our 80 Day Challenge!! The epic adventure begins... Today we are introduced to lovable, large-in-stature Nephi, born of goodly parents whom he honored and obeyed - even when his father Lehi dragged his family into the wilderness to "dwell in a tent." We learn so many beautiful lessons from Nephi in these chapters. He's not perfect, he has his doubts and things are difficult for him, but this is how he handles it: "...I did cry unto the Lord and behold he did visit me and soften my heart that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father; wherefore I did not rebel against him like my brothers." (1 Nephi 2:16) He was human, but humble and obedient and turned to God for answers - so the Lord was able to work with him! That's reassuring, as we can all be a powerful instrument in the Lord's hands despite our weaknesses if we are humble and willing. I'm inspired by Nephi's words when he fearfully approached Laban's house for the second time: "And I was lead by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do." (1 Nephi 4:6) How often do we go forward in faith, not having a clue HOW things work out, but feeling the Spirit guiding us to "go and do" certain things? Nephi was obedient, by nature. He did not seek to be the exception to the commandment, "Thou shalt not kill," but was told by the Spirit THREE TIMES to slay Laban. He was obedient to the Lord's commandments and didn't want to break them. If we are praying and hoping to BE an exception to a commandment, we may be off track. I am SOOO looking forward to the next 80 days together! If life gets CRAZY and you fall behind, just listen to the audio of the reading assignment, but keep plugging away! There are "make-up days" here and there, so it's very doable! "...he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them." (1 Nephi 3:7) Haha. Some families are tackling the 80 Day Challenge together. Wonderful! I post children's videos on the blog as well, although grown ups enjoy them too. :) You will not always have time to do everything on the blog. The important thing is to read or listen to the reading assignments, and supplement with things on the blog as time permits. Well, let's hop to it!! Thrilled to have you on board and excited for the spiritual strength and power we are about to generate as we feast on the word of God together! :) Heidi Jarvis We will begin each study session with a song and prayer to invite the spirit. Joseph Smith Record thoughts and impressions in your journal. Close with prayer and have a beautiful day! Supplemental video: Discussions on the Book of Mormon 1 Nephi 1-2
Are there any candidates for the actual volcano that caused the destruction described in 3 Nephi? There are at least two, according to Jeff and Louise Wynn. But first a few words of explanation.
This week we are studying one of the pivotal stories in the Book of Mormon, Lehi’s vision of the Tree of Life.
Nephi had a vision in which heavenly messengers showed him various things that would happen in the future. They also explained to him the symbolic vision of his father. Nephi’s vision is similar in many ways to accounts known as apocalyptic texts. Yet because those texts were written well after Lehi and Nephi left Jerusalem, one might wonder how a vision, like the ones found in 1 Nephi, could turn up in the sixth century BC.
