Nostalgic Memes for the 80s and 90s Kids - The internet has generated a huge amount of laughs from cats and FAILS. And we all out of cats.
Since I haven't had the luck to be born and to grow up in The United States of America, or any other Western country, but rather an occupation-torn post-Soviet state that has just regained its freedom, I've never actually seen or touched half of the things on this list. And, yet, looking at all these Poo-chi dogs, Polly Pockets, and things like phone charms, I feel a massive wave of 2000s nostalgia!
thank you google images Recently our school district had another shooting threat. Our town went through its own school shooting in 1996 and every now and then we get warnings. Sadly, it’s today’s new normal. On this last call the middle school decided to keep all the kids indoors for the day. I would think the kids had a better chance at not being hit on a playground running to and fro then in a crowded hall or lunchroom of wall to wall kids, but it’s a tough call. No matter what an administrator decides it will be second-guessed if someone is hurt. School playgrounds and playground rules are definitely not what they used to be and that is a sad reflection on us. I have great memories of playground games. Here are ten of my childhood favorites: · tag (in many forms – regular, freeze, TV, etc.) · pom-pom-pull-away · baseball (work up) · jump rope · hopscotch · rollerskating · blister bars · merry-go-round · Helen Keller · Rotten Egg I imagine every school had versions of Helen Keller and Rotten Egg: We played Helen Keller in a small foyer. “Helen Keller” put a coat over her head (if she couldn’t be trusted to keep her eyes closed) and was twirled around while everyone counted to ten. Then she groped her way around the little room until she caught someone and felt who she was. If she guessed correctly Helen Keller joined the game and the one that was caught became the new Helen Keller. (A game like that would never fly today what with political correctness and students touching each other. The real Helen Keller was a favorite heroine for many of us and we thought we were honoring her to play a game in her name.) We played Rotten Egg on the big cement steps. Eight or ten of us sat quietly thinking of a color. Whoever was “it” called out a color (any color) and then one by one rapped her knuckles on our heads. If the color was the color we’d chosen we chirped, “peep, peep, peep.” “It” and a friend swung us back and forth between their arms. If we smiled or laughed everyone chimed “Ewwwww, you’re a rotten egg” and we were out. If you didn’t smile or laugh you went into the good egg pile. The game continued until there were no more rotten eggs. The last (or first depending on the day) good egg got to be “it” the next game. Two of the jump rope rhymes we used were: Spanish Dancer touch the ground Spanish Dancer turn around Spanish Dancer do the high kick Spanish Dancer do the splits Spanish Dancer go upstairs Spanish Dancer say your prayers Spanish Dancer turn around Spanish Dancer get out of town Cinderella dressed in yella Went upstairs to kiss her fella Made a mistake and kissed a snake How many doctors will it take 1…2…3… We also sang these nonsensical songs: So-and-so stole a cookie from the cookie jar. (So-and-so would say) “Who me?” (Everyone would reply) “Yes you.” (So-and-so would say) “Couldn’t be.” (Everyone would respond) Then who?” (Then so-and-so would call out another name and the rhyme would start again.) Miss Lucy had a baby She named him tiny Tim She put him in the bathtub To see if he could swim He drank up all the water He ate up all the soap He tried to eat the bathtub But it wouldn’t go down his throat (I hated it when kids taunted with this next song. It was embarrassing.) Two little lovers sitting in a tree K-i-s-s-i-n-g First comes love Second comes marriage Third comes (names two people) pushing a baby carriage (I guess I shouldn’t have disliked that jingle. It did teach us the proper order of things: love, marriage, and then children which is much better than how some play today: children, marriage, and maybe love thrown in there somewhere. Maybe it had its purpose afterall.) How about you? What did you do on the playground? What were your jump rope rhymes? What games do your kids play on the playground now?
I have a vivid memory of walking around on can stilts as a child. I must have been about 5 or 6. And if my memory serves me right, I was...

These almond tarts are thought to have originated in the royal kitchens at Hampton Court Palace. It is believed King Henry VIII named them after Anne Boleyn, who became his second wife but was at the same time maid of honour to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Sweet pastry rounds are filled with a curd cheese and almond cake mixture then baked until risen and golden. Although it’s not traditional, you could add a teaspoon of your favourite jam to the pastry before you add the filling.

via Designsponge.com Pinterest remains my go-to for inspiration of all kind. My only wish is that I was better organized with my boards when I began pinning. Right now I have a board labeled 'food' but oh how I wish I had created 'sweets', 'appetizers', 'soups', 'chicken' etc….. So in my spare time maybe I might re-organize….ha! Thought I would share some of my favorite Pins from this week……. Via I am bringing dinner to a friend/client who recently had surgery next week. I am going to include THESE bars along with the dinner - they look amazing, and easy to make too! As a girl who spent my high school and college years in the 80's I found this sentiment REALLY funny! I know I didn't wear much neon in the 80's but I do know for sure that Molly Ringwald was my style icon! via My garden is growing like crazy so I know zuccihini season is right around the corner….I am definitely going to make this 'new to me' version of zucchini bread! And finally - I am heading to San Diego, California tomorrow to watch my girl play soccer……Can't believe it will be our fourth year attending this great tournament! We love San Diego and I can't wait to enjoy some sunshine, good soccer, dinners out and beach time! I'll be back next week! If you would like to follow me on Pinterest, you can find me HERE.

My Cousin and I at Christmas time. When I think about Christmas when I was younger there are many things that come to my mind - midnight mass, date nut rock cookies, family gatherings, the hallway being wrapped and presents. Yes, every year my Dad would wrap the hallway with wrapping paper from the floor to the ceiling so that children could not get up and peek in the middle of the night. This tradition has actually carried over as David and I have done this several years now. Me in front of our Christmas tree. My parents "spoiled" us when we were younger. I didn't understand that times were tough and they worked hard to provide a wonderful Christmas every year. It is only as an adult that I understand how difficult this was and truly appreciate how much they sacrificed for us. One gift that really stands out in my mind when I was a kid was the year my grandfather sent me a Teddy Ruxpin. Do you remember him? He was an animatronic bear that would read stories from cassette tapes that were inserted into his back. This is what my Teddy Ruxpin looked liked. I was so mesmerized by my talking bear. I loved listening to him tell stories and sometimes I would just stare and watch his mouth and eyes as they moved. I had no idea I was getting him for Christmas and it was such a happy surprise. Unfortunately, I have no idea what became of my Teddy. Hopefully he was passed along to someone else who was able to enjoy him. Do you have a favorite gift memory when you were younger? If you have been in the stores lately it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I am so excited about celebrating Christmas, with my family and friends, and making new friends along the way. Gifts are important, "God so loved the world that He gave ..." of Himself on Christmas, and there is much joy and blessing in giving and receiving. But I do understand that the Holiday season is about much more than a gift. I do love to see the kids' faces light up though. I am excited to take the kids to the Walmart Holiday Toyland event next Saturday, November 8th. During the event, we will get to test out the hottest holiday toys, find out more about the free Walmart Layaway program, and take photos with our favorite toys. I am really interested to see what the new toys are and interact with them and the kids. We just might be picking up something for our Operation Christmas Child boxes at the event. You can share your photos using #chosenbykids. Go here to see the list of participating stores and event dates. I hope to see you there! Disclosure: This is a sponsored post as part of the Walmart Holiday Toyland campaign through Sverve. All opinions expressed are my own.

The mini-pearls are always asking me what life was like in the olden days when I was little. Ah yes, the olden days. Well, we didn't have cartoons 24-7 on the television. We watched them after school and on Saturday mornings. In order to research a paper for school, we either consulted our trusty set of Encyclopedias that took up two shelves of the living room bookcases or we went to the library and looked-up books - by hand with a card catalogue. (never mind) We had to roll-up our car windows by hand crank. All of our food was cooked on the stove, until we got our first microwave that was bigger than our regular oven! We played records for entertainment on our disco studio record player - oh yes we did. It had colored lights that blinked to the beat; so cool. So, they want to know what some of my favorite things were. Well, I loved my real Cabbage Patch doll. A doll made out of panty hose with a hand-painted face, butt-cheeks and a silly name. What was my doll's name? Bonnie Blue. No plastic doll for me and paying the several hundred dollar price tag for the Xavier Roberts signed original was not in the cards for my family, so my mom made mine. Bonnie Blue really was cute and you could not tell the difference between her and the real ones. My mom is good. I think she (the doll, not my mom) is still in a closet somewhere at my mom and dad's. I also had a thing for the Muppets. Kermit, Rolf and Miss Piggy were my furry friends! I even had the Miss Piggy paper doll set. Yes, I did. My name is Krissy and I had a Miss Piggy paper doll set. I loved it. I miss it. Things were much simpler then. One thing that I cannot get the mini-pearls to understand is car travel in the olden days of my childhood. We only had a radio, our voices (we were a Griswold-esque singing bunch), car bingo and our imaginations. This seems to go way over their little heads. "But Mom, what did you do in the car?" My kids are under the impression that one must be doing something all the time. Doing something means watching or playing something that involves a screen and a computer chip. I really showed them! Last December when I purchased a new car, I intentionally chose one without a tv. You know what? It hasn't been all that bad! They know not to complain anymore and have accepted the fact that they will have to have actual conversations when they are in the car with me or sing. We have a lot of conversations. Thanks to the black hole that is Pinterest, I found a picture of the little handheld water ring toss game that my brother and I used to entertain ourselves in the car back in the olden days. Yes, those were the days. Happy Friday dear ones! Krissy

When it comes to drawing comics, the artist can choose to spend hours working on one comic that has quite a few panels; however, sometimes just one panel is more than enough to convey the idea one had in mind. Artist Scott Hilburn proves exactly that with his single-panel newspaper comics called “The Argyle Sweater” which are in their second decade of syndication.
