The tin business in New England grew rapidly after 1820. Tin shop owners imported tinplated sheet iron from Great Britain, shaped it into a variety of forms, and distributed their finished goods wholesale through peddlers and country stores. They also sold tinware in their shops. Colanders, dippers, dish kettles, funnels, measures, and pans were in greatest demand. Other common items included lanterns, footstoves, teapots, coffeepots, tin kitchens, skimmers, and sconces. The Tin Shop at Old Sturbridge Village is a reconfigured early 1800s shed. Here, “tinners” work with hand tools and machines that were new during the 19th century. These machines turned tinplate, made grooves and folds, and inserted wire, increasing a shop’s production.

We were lucky enough to buy this gorgeous burr Elm plank a few years ago for only £20 ! Ever since I've had it it's been challenging me to make something worthy of it's rare and beautiful nature. A bit like an uncut diamond. I think "that time has come" and a Windsor chair, footstool and a small side table would be good. Maybe an Arbotech not adze for roughing out the seat though? - what with all that mad grain ! Any other ideas ?

All our mantels are one of a kind reclaimed beams mainly out of turn of the century barns located here in Virginia. A combination of unique characteristics such as checks, cracks, mortise pockets, handhewn marks, saw marks, nail holes or wormholes give each piece a unique look and make them a great conversation piece in your house. All our mantels go through a process of reclaiming. The taking down of the barn (often by the owner of the company himself). Partial de-nailing (some of the beams might still have hardware in them which also adds to the unique look), carefully power washed and then either high temperature kiln dried or treated with Bora-Care (a unique green glycol mixture) to prevent insects from using the wood as a food source in the future. This listing is for the particular mantel pictured, zoom in on the photos to see the characteristics close up. Some mantels might have soft wood areas due to the barn getting wet. This will not affect the stability of the piece of lumber. Have your two favorite adjacent sides facing out and up, your least favorite against the wall and down. Also some of the pieces with saw marks might still have a slight bow to it due to the original piece. If you need the mantel cut to a different length, you can choose the custom length option in the drop down menu. If you do so, just send me a message after the purchase with the exact length and we will cut the mantel to the length you need. If you like the general appearance of this mantel but it isn’t the size you are looking for, click the “ask a question” button located above (right under the title of this listing). Let us know the size you're looking for. We have many different barn beams in our inventory that we can turn into mantels. If you need a custom mantel, just send me a message. – I typically reply within one business day. Any example pictures you may have are always helpful. Note: Because of lighting differences this mantel might look different in your home than it appears in the picture. We do always try to show the color and details as natural as possible. Local Pickup: You are welcome to pick the mantel up locally if you want to. We are in the Staunton VA (24401) area. #445
“Intermediate Technology in the Shop” – Harry Bryan The classic Small is Beautiful by E.F. Schumacher has been an inspiring read for generations who have sought a human-scale approach to economics. The concepts of wise, sustainable consumption of resources and an appropriate use of technology for the benefit of everyone hold broad appeal – but how might we apply these ideals in the workshop?
