Background The Olympic Games have a long and fascinating history that dates back to ancient Greece. Here's an overview of the history of the Olympics: Ancient Olympics: The ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from at least 776 BCE (some sources suggest they may have started earlier) to 393 CE when they were abolished by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I. The Games were dedicated to the Olympian gods, especially Zeus. They were part of a religious festival and were held every four years. The ancient Olympics included a variety of sports, such as running, wrestling, boxing, chariot racing, and the pentathlon. Athletes, known as Olympians, competed for honor and glory, and winners were awarded olive wreaths.
In ancient Greece, scarce public funds were not spent on getting athletes to the Olympics.
Having hosted the original modern Olympic Games in 1896 and been the site of athletic and cultural events in antiquity, the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens is packed with fascinating history and continues to be a part of the daily lives of Athenians
