Orgellol, humor met orgels
In our Age of Secularistion church buildings in The Netherlands have increasingly lost their religious function. So too the Broerenkerk of Zwolle in Overijssel. The church was originally built in 1465 as part of a Dominican Monastery in which an important part was played by Alanus de Rupe (1428-1475). Alanus was well-known for his devotion to the rosary. A century and a half later, in 1610, the church became a mainstay of the Protestants. The Broerenkerk's year of glory must have been 1824. By the munificence of Pieter Queijsen (1755-1831), originally of Deventer but now of Zwolle, a great new organ was built. Famous organ builder Johann Christoff Scheuer (1776-1854), born in Emlichheim, Germany, but residing in Zwolle, was its architect. He adorned his magnificent creation with a poem: Treed, Sterv'ling! Treed eerbiedig nader, En wijd bij Orgeltoon, uw Lied, Aan Hem die als weldadig Vader, Op al ziijn scheps'len nederziet. (In reverence, Mortal Man, enter closely and with organ music devote your song to Him who in beneficence looks down on all his creatures.) The church has now been converted into a popular bookshop, a temple of play and learning so to speak - Waanders in de Broeren. This way at least its architecture and the organ will be preserved. And those truly devoted to books and even The Book can enter reverently. Occasionally the house organist, Harm Jansen, gives short organ recitals.
