As a member of the local church, I have been wanting to do more to see God’s kingdom grow. At church, we sometimes have visitors attend regularly only to disappear after 1-2 visits; others become members. While I know God’s conviction plays a huge part in whether or not they return and decide to join, I often wonder why some don’t. Satan’s deception may play a part in it, yet I wonder if there’s more I (we) could be doing as a church body. Reading a complimentary copy of the book featured below, I have found some wonderful ideas to present to my church family. While some ideas conflict with our beliefs regarding non-members teaching, etc, I have found the book quite valuable. There are several areas that will potentially benefit our church if implemented: A questionnaire to help the local church score their current procedures in following up with recent visitors, as well as templates to get you started. A different perspective on Biblical hospitality I hadn’t considered. How first impressions are important, even in the church. Membership classes that could be offered, if not already taught seasonally as we currently do to remind all members of the local church’s […]
What makes you different makes you great. Affiliate links included within. With all the movements active today, I’m very concerned that my son will grow up believing the lies of Satan. I want my son to know it’s okay to be different as long as it doesn’t go against God in any way. He will face challenges not only because he has apraxia and sensory processing disorder, he also has he lives a life for Christ. With all that said, I need to be very particular about the books I allow him to read. I was recently blessed by FrontGate Media with a complimentary copy of a book that teaches God-honoring truths about our differents in a kid-friendly format. What I Liked Most About the Book Beyond the God-honoring message, I also love the illustrations, the sentence length and the bolded key words. The illustrations are made up of beautiful colors and happy fun characters that catch my son’s eye. All the children are smiling, including mine. The sentences are short, which is perfect my the short attention span my son has. The book will also be a smart reading choice when my son is ready to read. Currently, we […]

Very few books reach my favorites list. However, I recently added a non-fiction book to that list. A week later I am adding this one. Give me a well-written book about books and you have sold me! No, it honestly takes more than that but that’s a terrific start, Roseanna! (She’s the author of the book I received a complimentary copy of. You can read about it below.) Have you read anything by Roseanna M. White? What’s your favorite title? Click To Tweet Within the pages of this book, I was taken on an adventure filled with deception (by necessary means, it seems) by one character and the naivety of another. Seeing these people from very different classes being brought under one roof for the intent of a job (or two) to be done. While fiction, the author reminds all of us how Jesus’ love is for everyone, not just the so-called ‘good’ person. I enjoyed seeing this truth play out in the story. I also enjoyed the ending, although one part was not expected. Rosemary is my favorite character in this story, followed closely by Mrs. Teague. After you read the book, you may not agree with me on the […]
I’ve experienced disappointment, rejection, injustice and loss. I’m sure you have, too. I’m not quite certain I’ve handled these intruders the best way possible. At times, I’ve been left feeling crippled. Reading a complimentary copy of the book pictured above, I have learned how to come back stronger after experiencing any variation of suffering. I read my way through this book, sometimes rereading sections to allow myself to really take it in. I learned new things, as well as being reminded of things I’ve learned from reading my Bible or hearing it preached at church. Among these things include: 3 Sources of Suffering 10 Things That Keep Us Stuck in Suffering 9+ Results of Remaining Stuck in Suffering I also learned the importance of gratitude and balancing emotional bondage in getting unstuck. The victory verses provided for each chapter of this book brought me back to the truth – wrapping up the book content around God’s word. One section that really stuck out for me was titled “Is it possible to inadvertently worship our suffering?” While I was convicted, I was also shown how to move past this. Another section gave me balanced and biblical perspective on self-care … just what I needed. While […]

Being a mother is not easy. Some days I cry because I feel like such a failure. I recently read a complimentary copy of the below-mentioned book about chaotic motherhood. While the author’s spiritual beliefs and practices are not the same as mine, I have found similarities in our lives as moms. Hearing her stories about chaotic days and a cluttered front yard helped me feel more at peace with the less-than-perfect mothering I am doing these days. I also related to her experiences of having a child later in life as I had my last child at the age of 36. Somedays I feel like his grandmother more than his momma. The author provided a lot of hugs and wisdom through her writing. I think I really would enjoy sitting down in her living room visiting while the kiddos played. Reading during the Christmas holiday is next to impossible. I enjoy reading daily, but all the Christmas events and preparation keep me busier than I like. That’s why I was excited to read a complimentary pdf copy of the book below. It was a quick read being less than 100 pages. The length did not take away from the author’s ability to provide a fun loving story about a woman looking for a suitable husband. The man trying to convince her that “he’s the one” was my favorite character by all. About the Book Patience Callahan is twenty-five and fast becoming an old maid. But she s spent most of her life dreaming over romantic European literature and wants a dashing d Artagnan, not a bookish Bob Cratchit. Alas, the Colorado town of Gilman is chock-full of Cratchit s without a d Artagnan in sight. Peter Foote, the general store owner, has been in love with Patience for seven years. But every time he s on the verge of proposing, she cuts him off; he can only imagine on purpose. This time though, dadburn it, he s going to go through with it. Ring in hand, he s moments from […]
seeing beauty in brokenness
I tend to stick to books that tell me how to solve a problem or give me a good checklist or strategy to follow. Taking time to laugh as I read this book, is just what I needed. Some pieces of her story and testimony caused me to pause and think about my own life, as I often let fear take the lead. This and the laughter were both good for my spiritual and emotional wellbeing. Expectations or what I think others expect of me play a big role in my decisions. The author says “practice makes perfect, so put expectations aside and put to good use what God says about you.” – page 82. That is just what I need to hear often. God is the one who should be leading me and I often forget all He says about me, His child, in His word. She even talks about breakdowns being a sign that you need a break. I don’t take the cue when a break would do me so much good. Lots of good stuff in this book. Enjoy! About the Book Though her life has been dotted with disaster, it’s through laughter that social media […]
I am now a fan of mystery! I have always enjoyed reading historical romance, specifically Christian. Yet, the one I received a complimentary copy of titled Lady Jayne Disappears has some mystery in it. Oh, each and every chapter, I was in suspense over who was responsible for what was had happened. My favorite character is definitely, Aurelie, the one telling the story. Her character was one to be admired. I enjoyed the story written around a writer and all the secrets the writer held onto. I am definitely a new fan of Joanna Davidson Politano. About the Book Lynhurst Manor is a house built on secrets . . . and the arrival of Aurelie Harcourt might reveal them all. When Aurelie Harcourt’s father dies suddenly, he leaves her just two things: his famous pen name, Nathaniel Droll, and his wealthy family–who want very little to do with her. As Aurelie struggles to find a home with her father’s family and learn the rules of society, she relishes in his parting gift–the beginning of his last story. The story she always wanted to hear, about her mother’s mysterious disappearance from the home where she now lives. To complete the novel, she’ll have […]
An Inconvenient Beauty, A Magnificent Read: t's one of those books that disappoint you on the last page … only because it has ended!
You're up with a sick toddler. You've only had about an hour's sleep. You have to be at work by 8 a.m. How to prepare for days like this.
It's a tribute to Albert Facey that in his simply told, poignant autobiography, he was able to say that his had been a 'fortunate' life. There were many episodes in his life which many would class as most unfortunate, but although he acknowledged his life had its share of hardship and difficulties, he was grateful for much. Before he had turned two his father died, and not long afterwards his mother deserted him. His kind grandmother took on his care, but even so, circumstances forced him to start working when he was only eight years of age. Denied a formal education, he grew up illiterate and because of this disadvantage he missed out on opportunities to learn a proper trade. As a young lad he was ill-treated and ill-used at times, doing work which was akin to slavery. He eventually taught himself to read and write, but it was a slow and difficult process. He survived Gallipoli, but two of his brothers were killed there, and Albert was to endure years of pain and disability from injuries he suffered in the trenches. After four months on Gallipoli ('the worst four months of my whole life') a shell exploded in his trench, killing a mate and badly injuring himself. He was sent to Cairo for treatment and was repatriated back to Australia in 1915. Albert said that he had two lives that were miles apart. Up until just after the war he had had a lonely and solitary existence but then he met Evelyn, the woman who was to become his wife: After our marriage my life became something which was more than just me. Albert and Evelyn raised a family through the depression years and Albert involved himself with the Trade Union movement and battled to improve the general conditions for workers. When World War II broke out three of their sons enlisted. Only two of them returned home after the war. Their eldest son was killed in a bomb attack while defending Singapore. Albert Facey was an ordinary man who overcame extraordinary circumstances. When he retired, Evelyn encouraged him to write down the story of his life. He crammed his stories into school exercise books, thinking that at some stage he would get copies printed for family members. The manuscript sat in a cupboard for years but in 1979, when he was eighty-five years of age, his autobiography came to the attention of the Fremantle Arts Centre Press and was accepted for publication. A Fortunate Life was published in 1981, nine months before Albert died. Some thoughts A. B. Facey was a true historian, a story-teller. As I read the story of his life I could almost imagine he was sitting in the room speaking. It is simply written, understated, almost matter of fact, but totally real and engaging. It's sobering to think that many people born in the late 19th or early 20th Century would have seen and endured similar circumstances - WWI, the Great Depression, WWII, industrial expansion. Death was a common visitor to many families and not just during the war years. We live in a very different world today. Apart from Albert's time in Gallipoli, the book is mostly set in Western Australia and it is a fascinating account of frontier life in that state. It was also interesting to read of the early days of the Trade Union Movement. Albert was a true Labor man and believed the Labor Party was on the side of the workers. I wonder what he would think about the Labor Party we have now? Albert had a definite belief that Providence had brought his wife and him together, but towards the end of the book he said that the wars changed his outlook on things and that he found it difficult to believe in God. I highly recommend this book for anyone - Aussie or otherwise. It is a valuable insight to the changes which swept through the 20th Century as seen by an ordinary person. It's also a beautiful love story and a lesson in perspective. From the Afterword by Jan Carter: What has Albert Facey left us? There is his description of childhood and adult-child relations at the beginning of this century which indicate how great the changes in childhood have been. There is his personal account of the dehumanising and brutal effects of war (the one defeat he felt morally unable to accept). There is his documentation of the types and processes of work including some vanishing occupations. There are all these things and more, but in the end, Albert Facey's autobiography must be classified as political history, for he contributes to the neglected history of this country... From Facey, we know what it was like to be poor and young at the gold rushes... We know what it was like to be an itinerant worker... We understand the predicaments of a first-world-war private... He describes being a husband and father with mouths to feed in the Depression... Albert Facey is Australia's pilgrim. Besides being a wonderful story for adults, this book is also suitable as a read aloud with some editing for younger listeners, or for readers around the age of 14 years and up. There is also an abridged version of the book for younger readers which is very well done. A Forunate Life was one of my choices for the Aussie Author Challenge 2015.

My son enjoys books. He enjoys hidden picture books more than any other kind. A day usually doesn’t go by without eyeballing a book of this type. He loves to find things (except for that lost shoe in his messy room). He was most excited to receive the complimentary copy of the book above from B&H Kids. This hidden pictures book is his favorite now. It has benefits that the other books do not have. Here’s a list showcasing why we love The Look & Find Bible Storybook: Each story teaches a true account from God’s Word. What better way to exercise his detective skills than through a Bible story?!? Each two-page spread only has one story. It is short enough to hold his attention. He can look at the busy and colorful scene that takes place within the story, as I read to him. The story page then opens up to formerly hidden) checklist of items to find in the scene. While the complete list is typewritten words, there are also picture cards for some of the items to be found (for younger kiddos). The pages are made for dry-erase markers. That checklist can be checked off as we find the […]
Whether you’re a fan of golf or not, you’ll find Wally Armstrong’s testimony of His relationship with Jesus interesting. While I don’t see Jesus outfitted in golfing attire, I appreciate the way the author encourages us to picture Jesus in the here and now with us. While the author tells us to use our imagination, I see it more as realizing Jesus is real and in our every day lives. We just forget about Him because he isn’t visible. The only way to grow that friendship with Jesus is to get to now Him, as the author encourages us to do by getting into God’s Word. The book consists of a mere 112 pages, but his testimony will have you changing your relationship with Jesus Christ into what it should be. How can you claim victory in parenting while facing today’s cultural trends? Affiliate links included in this post. About the Book Raising kids in today’s society can be daunting. Wrong is called right, smartphones replace human interaction, families are fractured, and children aren’t maturing as quickly as they used to. In our ever-changing culture, parenting can sometimes feel like a losing battle. “We want our much-loved children to grow up into a life of godliness and morality,” says Arlene Pellicane, author of Parents Rising: 8 Strategies for Raising Kids Who Love God, Respect Authority, and Value What’s Right (Moody Publishers / April 2018). “But our children won’t drift into a life of godliness and morality by accident. Because of the morally bankrupt world we live in, it takes a great deal of intentional parenting to provide structure and spiritual handrails to guide our children towards lives submitted to God.” Pellicane, an author, speaker, popular media personality, blogger, wife, and mother of three, believes there’s too much at stake in eternity to sit on the sidelines or get sidetracked on a smartphone when it comes to parenting. “The greater culture hangs on what happens in the microcosm of our homes,” says Pellicane. “We need to not be afraid to step up and lead our […]
Are you married? Are you planning on getting married? I’ve been married 18 years and still need some guidance. Marriage is hard work, but worth it. Take a look at some of the books I have read and recommend to my married (or soon-to-be married) readers. #6. A Marriage Carol Just a little over 100 pages, I was able to read and enjoy A Marriage Carol in just a few days. A revision of A Christmas Carol is just what a struggling or indifferent marriage needs! As I read the book, I couldn’t help but look at the past, present and future of my own marriage. The authors’ intent is not to point the finger, neither at the husband or wife. I was simply moved by the story and could relate my marriage to their’s in some ways. The intent is to get you, the wife or the husband, to look at your marriage and see what you individually can do to improve your marriage as a whole, with having hope as your first step. #5. The Ring Makes All the Difference: The Hidden Consequences of Cohabitation and the Strong Benefits of Marriage The book really does a great job of enlightening the […]
This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I chose the book because, hey, I love guacamole! The way that she uses guacamole to write about our undeniable worth is an unexpected but very fitting illustration. I spend a lot of time focused on my lack of worth, feeling like I am not capable of doing what God has called me to do. This book is a wonderful reminder and refresher on my worth in Christ. “We can’t love others well if we’re always staring at a device.” — page 71 In the Back of the book, each chapter has a page or so briefly talking about the chapter with questions to engage you in contemplation and action. I’ve already taken action on the chapter that most touched me in this season of my life. Chapter 4 has prompted me to put my phone down when with family. It’s so easy to stay on it all day, using the excuse that I use the internet and social media for work. However, I need to make in person connections a priority, especially with my son. May you follow the author’s advice in the last chapter to “engage [our] whole […]

Christmas, sadly, is a stressful time of year for me. I realize it is for others, as well. While I love to give to others, it can bring up feelings of overwhelm and inadequacy. It’s not common to read a fiction book and find God’s truth in it. Carolyn Miller did an excellent job of reminding her readers of God’s perfect timing, as well as His unconditional love, in this story of a young lady looking for love. As I read my complimentary copy of this book from Kregel Publications, I fell in love… As I usually do, I did not have one favorite character. I fell in love with several of the characters. The way the author portrayed their love for God and others, despite their own flaws and the aggravating stresses from others, really touched my heart. I even paused a few times to reflect on my own character and visit with God about the desired change in the way I love others. While I know that these characters are not real persons, the way God’s love was reflected in them is a great reminder of how we are instructed in God’s word to be in this real world. The main character, Lady Charlotte, reminded me of my own naivety in my younger days. One man in the story reminded me of an older man in my church who showed God’s love […]
