"Matahorua" was inspired by the legendary arrival of Kupe, the great Polynesian navigator. Kupe is said to have journeyed from Hawaiiki, the ancestral homeland of Māori, to become the first of his people to arrive in Aotearoa. Matahorua (also known as Matawhaorua) was the name of his great ocean-going vessel. It is pictured in this painting, resting quietly on the shores.
