Before my youngest turned 10 last week, he declared that he wanted a Doctor Who themed birthday party. Now, throwing parties is not my thing. Parties take a whole lot out of me, and so I try to avoid being a party host as much as possible. But AJ is my youngest and he's... #birthday #party

Throw a Doctor Who season premiere party! Most of you don't know this about me, but I'm a MAJOR Whovian. Hubby and I have watched all of the 2007 reboot of Doctor Who at least a few times and have been starting in on watching all the original series. We are lucky to have many Whovian friends, so we threw a huge bash for the 50th anniversary episode, The Day of the Doctor, back in November. With the Doctor Who Premiere coming up in just a few weeks on August 23, 2014, I thought I'd share some photos, recipes, and ideas
We have provided some fun "Doctor Who" party ideas perfect for a season premiere, season finale, or Doctor Who-themed birthday parties!
Make this Doctor Who themed party bunting--without any sewing! Themed after the 10th (David Tennant) and 11th (Matt Smith) Doctors.
Doctor Who week continues today with a couple of super easy ideas to make your Doctor Who party extra special! Both of these ideas would work perfectly with store-bought cupcakes, and can be put together in just a few minutes! I would say of all the Doctor Who villains, the Daleks are the most iconic!...
Time for the promised TARDIS card tutorial! As an added bonus this tutorial shows you my method of making standard card blanks. This is the first tutorial I have made, so if you have any feedback do let me know so future tutorials might be improved... In order to avoid sounding like a broken record I'll let you know right here that you need to be quite precise here. It'll really show in the results. On with the tutorial - Allons-y! These are the tools used. With one exception - the glue marker. How I could forget such a useful object is beyond me. Tools and materials: TARDIS blue cardstock - A4 or 12" square Black cardstock - scrap is OK White cardstock - scrap is OK White printer paper Self-healing cutting mat Clear quilting ruler Metal ruler Rotary cutter Craft knife Bone folder Glue stick Glue marker Glue tape Fine silver paint or gel pen Black fineliner - 0.1 Pencil The first step is to make the card blank. Start by cutting an 8"x6" piece of TARDIS blue card. Keep the scraps, you'll need them later. The best way to make the larger cuts is with a quilting ruler and rotary cutter. The cuts are kept straight and it's very easy to line things up precisely (don't use a craft knife with a quilting ruler, you'll kill the ruler). Using the bone folder, score a line at the 4" mark on the long side. If the paper is textured, score on the side that will be the inside. Fold along the line and, with the card folded, run the flat of the folder along the crease to sharpen it. Cut the top inch from the side that will become the front cover, and prepare for one of the trickier sections. Keeping in mind you will need to erase later, rule a pencil line one inch from the top in line with the previous cut(not shown in the picture). Measuring up from here rule a line at 3/8", 1/8" and 1/8". This should leave 3/8" at the top. As per the lower left section of the picture above, n the lowest ruled section draw vertical lines 1/4" from each side. In the next section draw lines 1/2" from each side. In the top section draw lines around a 1/4" section at the centre. Join this to the tier below with a diagonal line. Cut around this outline using a metal ruler and craft knife. You may find it easiest to cut small sections away. Erase the remaining pencil lines. Cut a section of black cardboard 1/4"x3.5", or slightly shorter if you prefer (see right side pictures). Write on the card with a silver paint or gel pen as shown. Stick in place with glue stick or marker. Cut a 1/4" square of white card. Stick to form the light at the top of the card. That's the top section complete! Next, on to the front. Cut four 1.5" squares, four in blue, two in white. Cut a blue strip 1/8" wide and at least 4.5" long. Don't worry if it curves a bit, that's fairly unavoidable. Cut it into three 1.5" sections. Using a glue marker, stick the strips on to form a window pattern. On the front flap of the card, stick the blue and white squares. They should be 1/4" from the edge of the card and 1/8" from the top, bottom and other squares. You can use any kind of paper glue here, but glue tape doesn't have a drying time so you can continue on without fear of shifting things. Repeat for the other side. Cut a piece of white card or printer paper 1"x3/4" and write on it with a fineliner as shown. Glue it to the centre left panel. While you're at it, why not add a silver doorknob? Congratulations! The front is complete. The rest should, by comparison, be very easy. The pop-up that will form the inside is a map fold. There's a great tutorial for it on this website (link replaced Feb 2015) which I doubt I can improve on. Use an 8"x8" square. The tutorial uses a rectangle, but squares are fine. If you put it in your card you'll likely find it's marginally large. No worries! Cut off 1/8" and get the added bonus of an extremely tidy visible end. Use glue tape on one side and stick the folded paper in with the centre line 2.5" from the bottom. Be sure to get the point right into the fold of the paper. Put glue tape onto the other side, press the card firmly shut, then re-open... Ta-da! It's bigger on the inside! With Adelaide's famous Christmas Pageant on tomorrow and as I'm also preparing a lot of work for a stall I'll have at St John's Anglican Church Christmas Fair (Friday 16th November, 6p.m., Church Gardens at 379 Halifax Street, Adelaide) I'm in a very Christmassy frame of mind. I twisted together sparkly pipe cleaners and made a wreath to make a Christmas TARDIS. That concludes my first tutorial! I hope you liked it - I expect I'll make more in future. If you use this tutorial, either as-is or with modifications, I'd love to see what you do! Please do not use this to produce items for sale. Do, however, feel free to share the tutorial further. By all means use the first or last image as a link, but please link to this blog for the rest of the tutorial. P.S. The link marked as replaced in 2015 was changed as the original site was now just throwing particularly dubious looking ads. Sorry about that, and hopefully the replacement will stay... if it should fail again, search 'map fold tutorial', there are quite a few about - Heather
A new Doctor and a new series are on the way! Are you ready to party? This Doctor Who party was about a month in the making. I hope it gives you some ideas for your party! Decorations TARDIS console centerpiece (made of foam board and lots of timey-wimey knickknacks). The center column is made with green ginger ale bottles. From the chandelier I hung a large and small fill-it-yourself plastic Christmas ball ornament, in which I put blinking LED lights. I cut the TV out of a small cardboard box, and put a print out of one of The Adipose on the screen. The TV is hung with a dish-drying rack from the dollar store. The dollar store was a great place to buy silly sci-fi looking items. The table runner was made of gold foam board and lined with "things in jars" including a creepy doll, a light-up monster, and the 10th Doctor's severed hand (from a halloween store). Guests were greeted by a huge Face of Boe hanging in the foyer. The Face of Boe is drawn on four sheets of poster board, so it's quite large. Drawn with black marker and painted in arcylics with a sponge brush. Companion timeline print-out, which you can find here: http://www.onlinedating.org/doctor-who-companions/ The TARDIS was, of course, the star of the show (isn't she always?). She was a joint effort. My Dad and sister did most of the real work on her. She is made of ply wood. I used picture frames (dollar store!) to make the panels down the front and the windows. A dollar store LED tiki lantern painted black provides the top light. The false-door sign is a print-out I found here: http://tibots.deviantart.com/art/tardis-door-sign-88184940 . A coat of blue paint, and there you have it! Our two-sided TARDIS took about a week to construct. The TARDIS door opened into our basement, so it was appropriately bigger on the inside. I lined the walls leading into the basement with those round touch lights, to mimic the lighting in the TARDIS. The Food The menu was based on foods mentioned in the show and Doctor Who aliens. We had . . . The Adipose Marshmallows (large marshmallow with gel icing face, small marshmallow hands and feet "glued" on with a mixture of confectioners sugar and water) Sontaran Spuds (baked potatoes, cashew noses, googly eyes made of empty gelatin pill capsules and black pepper kernels), serve with potato fixings (cheese, sour cream, butter, crumbled bacon, chives) Dalek Cupcakes (recipe here: http://vimeo.com/channels/tofuguru#11053231) Starry Night Cucumber Sandwiches Jammie Dodgers (made from two sugar cookies, one with a heart cut out, stuck together with raspberry jam; or you can order the original Jammie Dodgers here: http://www.amazon.com/Burtons-Jammie-Dodgers/dp/B000HY5A3Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317074412&sr=8-1) We also had (not pictured) fruit salad with bananas on the side (10th Doctor says: "Always bring a banana to a party); Fish sticks and custard (not mixed together . . .); and mini hot dogs "the cybermen of food"). Game We only had one game, as I find that many people find party games pretty tedious. The object was for guests to list as many of the aliens from Doctor Who as they could over the course of the first hour. The person who remembered the most aliens won . . . The Doctor's Companion's Kit The Companion's Kit contains: Map of the TARDIS, Map of England, Map of the USA, international currency, passport, Cassandra memorial skin, container for anti-Slitheen vinegar, teddy bear (in case of home sickness), cell phone (call mom from the future!), a TARDIS key, and an LED light (for all that sneaking around in the dark you'll be doing) Costumes Guests were invited to come as their favorite doctorial, dalek-table, whovian character. We had the 4th, 9th, and 11th doctors, as well as Dr. Dale K Hu (dressed in scrubs); a green alien; a Slitheen in human form with a zipper forehead; a Master; Madam Kovarian; Rory in a plaid shirt, vest, and centurion's helmet; the Doctor's Next Companion; and I was one of the Sisters of Plenitude (cat nun). This shoot is certainly going to appeal to all you Whovians out there. Come on then, tell me, who's having Dr Who influences in their wedding? "Ever since I became a fan of Doctor Who I’d wanted to do a styled shoot and combine it with one of my other favourite things in life: weddings, of course!" explained photographer Kat Forsyth. "I’d seen a couple of Who-themed shoots around, but I always felt that none of them got it quite right; they were either really pretty, floral and sparkly, or a little too much like a cheesy costume party. I was sure that by assembling a hand-picked team of Doctor Who geeks (read: experts), we could come up with a shoot that not only captured the quirky and fun aspect of the show, but also the atmosphere."

My birthday party always falls on the same weekend as the time change, so I thought it would be fun to host a time-travel party. My guests were asked to dress as someone from their favorite era (early 21st century attire was totally fine) or as their favorite Doctor Who Character. I dressed like a Dalek. Here's how I threw an awesome Doctor Who-themed birthday party with Whovian decor, favors, and food!
