Nickel- and zinc-plated items can be quite bright and silvery when first plated. These metals are often admired for their brilliance and are polished to achieve a bright and shiny look. However, there is a simple premade chemical solution you can use to antique or tarnish nickel, effectively dulling its shine and ...

Techniques and tips for artificially aging metal for rustic garden crafts; learn about patina, verdigris and how to make tin look aged
Ancient copper can get lovely blue patina, in the right environmental conditions. The Statue of Liberty gets its green color from the natural patina formed on its copper surface Photo of statue of liberty on courtesy of WIKIPEDIA. Photo on courtesy of: http://www.hotgluehangover.com/p/my-shop.html You can age a copper dish or jewelry by giving it blue patina. There are commercial agents for that, but you can do it with household salt and vinegar Vinegar is my idea of "magic potion". My family members hate the smell of it, because I use it all over. Tips on using vinegar: http://www.versatilevinegar.org/usesandtips.html Steps of making blue patina on copper: Cleaning the copper: First, clean the copper using dish washing liquid and wash with tap water . Sprinkle some baking soda over it. Scrub the copper with steel wool. Wash with tap water. Dry with paper towels. Avoid touching it with your fingers. Vinegar and salt solution: Mix 3 tablespoons of salt with 6 tablespoons of vinegar in a small bowl. Most of the salt will not dissolve. Put the copper in the liquid. It should be all covered. Let it soak for an hour. Drying: Take the copper out and put on paper towels. Do not wipe the copper. It has to be dried naturally. Sprinkle some salt on. Leave it to develop the patina. If you want to enhance the process, dip a paper towel in vinegar and lay on the copper. Let it stay on until you are happy with the patina created. Because some of it will not stay on, it is better to have more patina than you like it to have in the end. This might be taking a few days . Take the paper off. Let dry. Below you can see what I got after 24 hours of salt-vinegar treatment. Gently rinse with water. If you want to remove more patina, use steel wool. Let air dry. After a few days you can spray it with clear lacquer. After a few days and washing with water The other side of the same piece of copper: A piece of brass going through the same treatment

We are sharing this post by blogger Debbie Hayes of MyPatchOfBlueSky.com. If you know me by now, you are aware that I adore anything crusty, rusty, and covered in patina. Furniture, accessories, mailboxes, old doors. Anything! I have a blast combining products from my amazing clients to create what I call magic. Rose Wilde, owner of Wood Icing®, is wonderfully encouraging about my ideas for using Textura Paste. Years ago I had an employer who used to say they would just “wind me up and let me go” and Rose does the same. Be still my heart! For this post I was in the mood to work on art canvases. But maybe not the traditional “hang-it-on-the-wall” variety. Sometimes artwork just placed on our plank wood coffee table with some strewn pine cones makes me just as happy. I found these three pre-packaged gallery wrap canvases at Michael’s which were perfect, adding more interest and display possibilities. SUPPLIES • Wood Icing® Textura Paste • Modern Masters Metal Effects products: Primer, Iron Paint + Rust Activator, Copper Paint + Green Patina Solution, Bronze Paint + Blue Patina Solution, Permacoat Xtreme sealer • Royal Design Studio Phoebe’s Tulip Wall Stencil • canvases, color shaper or putty knife, paper towels, stencil brush, paint brushes, small roller, rags, containers PRIME, ADD IRON PAINT & SEAL Roll or brush on 2 coats of Modern Masters Primer according to directions and let dry overnight. (Resist the temptation to use regular household primer, which will not work properly with Metal Effects products.) Roll or brush on 2 coats of Iron Paint. Let Dry. Spray 2 coats of Rust Activator according to directions. Let dry. Enjoy watching the rust develop! When dry, brush on a coat of Permacoat Xtreme sealer so the Wood Icing Textura Paste will adhere. (Not shown.) Let dry. ADD HEAVY TEXTURE Butt the three canvases together. Use a color shaper tool or a putty knife to drag some layers of Textura Paste from the top down on the canvases. Don’t cover too much so the background rust will show. Let dry about 45 minutes or until completely dry. ADD COPPER PAINT AND GREEN PATINA Use a small, stiff artist paint brush to paint some copper onto the texture only. Let dry. Add another layer, but DO NOT LET DRY. Immediately spray Green Patina Solution generously on the entire surface. Let dry. It’s great fun to watch as the patina evolves. Here is the moment when you should decide whether or not you want to stop or add more. Since I was in a “let’s see what else we can do” mood, I added the next step. But I do love it at this point too! ADD A STENCIL, BRONZE PAINT AND BLUE PATINA Lay the large stencil over the surface and move it around until you like the composition. Use a big stencil brush to stencil one layer of bronze paint. Leave the stencil in place. DO NOT LET DRY. Immediately spray the Blue Patina Solution. Remove the stencil and let dry. More fun watching the pattern evolve. So was this the most fun ever? I even like the rusty, drippy edges. At this point I am willing to bet that you are itching to try this. Am I right?
