Peat is a type of soil rich in organic matter. They store huge amounts of carbon, which we want them to keep locked up -- otherwise this worsens climate change. Unfortunately 80% of the UK's peatlands are in bad shape and contributing to climate change. This was one of the worst sites we have ever seen -- how did it get this bad, and what can we do about it? COP26 is a huge conference of world leaders and other important delegates on tackling climate change. Since it's held in Scotland this year, we're taking the opportunity to shout about something we need to recognise globally if we're serious about global warming. Scotland's peatlands are starting to be recognised as hugely important habitats, but there are many more around the world which are being actively degraded. COP26 is an ideal time to push for more peatland protections worldwide.

South Dee is a Forest to Bog site in Dumfries and Galloway. This peatland was afforested - which we now know is bad practice - and so when the trees were harvested, the site was restored. This is hard work, but worth it. Take a look at the change 18 months later. But why is peat so important? • It can store carbon forever, continually - unlike other habitats, which have a natural 'ceiling' to how much carbon they can store, such as woodlands. • It is so important in tackling climate change - 80% of the UK's peatlands are degraded, and are releasing 4% of our annual greenhouse gas emissions. • Damaged peatland affects our waterways and water cycle. More flooding, more costly interventions to take washed out peat out of our drinking water. • Peatland is a very unique habitat, and so l
