Todi, auf einem steil abfallenden Hügel etwa 400 m hoch über dem Tiber-Tal gelegen, gehört zur Provinz Perugia. Die Stadt wurde als umbrische Siedlung Tutere zwischen dem 8. und 7. Jh. v. Chr. gegründet . Sie gelangte im Jahr 217 v. Chr. unter römische Herrschaft., erhielt den Namen Tuder. und wurde zur Veteranenkolonie des römischen Heeres. Nach den Gotenkriegen, in denen die Stadt zerstört wurde, folgte eine wechselvolle Geschichte, in der Todi von den Langobarden besetzt war, später zum Kirchenstaat gehörte und während der Pestepidemie im Jahr 1523 die Hälfte der Bevölkerung verlor. Heute gilt Todi als 'Musterbeispiel einer alten Stadt mit moderner Lebensqualität', wie ein amerikanischer Professor 1991 im Rahmen einer Studie feststellte.
