If you've been following Smashing Magazine for a while, you know that almost all posts from the [Monday Inspiration series](https://www.smashingmagazine.com/category/monday-inspiration/) are pretty colorful and eye-catching. This post is an exception. Compared to colorful designs where catchy colors help the design to stand out, in black-and-white designs the ability to stand out depends only on its ability to communicate rather than on its appealing visual presentation.

During my first studio visit with John Baldessari, about a decade ago, when he still cooked up his ideas from a low-rent, rough-edged compound behind a surfboard shop in Santa Monica, he pointed out a chair beside a towering stack of books. With a simple metal frame and basic wood seat, it looked like a […]

Signed + numbered by artist with certificate of authenticity , unframed Please note. There are three sizes of this archival pigment print; each is an edition of five (5) making the total that can be printed as fifteen (15). This will include any custom sizes requested Archival pigment print available sizes ( Image size , the white margin is not counted) : 50 x 37 cm / 19,68 x 14,57 in - Edition of 5 75 x 56 cm / 29,53 x 22,04 in. - Edition of 5 102 x 76 cm / 40,15 x 29,92 in. - Edition of 5 Ian Sanderson (born 1951 Scotland, died 2020 Spain) was a Scottish photographer. He produced images over a 35 year career, and in recent years used archival techniques to produce his prints. For most of his career he worked as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer, and during his last years concentrated on his personal imagery. Towards the end of his life journey, Ian was reviving with his partner two 19th century printing techniques, Platinum Palladium and Gum Bichromate ( one-of-a-kind pieces). This culminated in a large retrospective exhibition in Barcelona which was sponsored by the 'Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation’. The Platinum and Palladium prints are particularly interesting as he printed them onto ‘vellum’, and bonded pure gold or silver to the back of the prints ( every print is therefore a unique and timeless piece of art). Ian created rare and customized pieces and each piece was totally original and a “one-off”. Ian Sanderson was one of only a handful of artists worldwide producing this type of work. Nowadays, Ian’s partner continues their work and she’s still creating prints. categories : Black and white photography, 20th. century, Archival pigment print, 90's, France, Rain, Street, City, Cityscape , Photographic film, Analogue, Analog, Oversize, Grainy

Visual artist Noell Osvald (previously) creates startlingly bold works through simple gestures all performed in black and white. The self-portraits rarely show the 25-year-old artist’s face, instead expressing emotion through the way she tilts her head or slightly crooks her neck. Emphasizing line, her works incorporate a strict horizon or eliminate it altogether, segmenting the image from left to right. In one particularly powerful image the back of her head faces the camera and her hair is completely down. More
