The universe is almost devoid of antimatter, and physicists haven’t yet figured out why. Discovering any slight difference between the behavior of antimatter and matter in Earth’s gravitational field could shed light on this question. Positronium atoms, which consist of an electron and a positron, are one type of antimatter atoms being considered to test whether antimatter falls at the same rate as matter in Earth’s gravitational field. But they are short-lived, lasting a mere 142 nanoseconds –
Using the Canadian Light Source (CLS) synchrotron, scientists developed new, cutting-edge technique enabling them to visualize the inner-workings of electronics. The lead scientist on this project is seen posing next to a great looking vacuum system which features a very well placed MDC vacuum viewport (thanks for the product placement, guys!): http://phys.org/news/2014-08-glimpse-future-state-of-the-art-electronics.html#jCp #CLS #synchrotron #physics #viewport #MDCVacuum #vacuumchamber
Researchers from Washington State University and Tufts University have demonstrated for the first time that a single metal atom can act as a catalyst in converting carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, a chemical reaction that is commonly used in catalytic converters to remove harmful gases from car exhaust. The researchers demonstrated that the reaction can work with single platinum atoms on a copper oxide support near room temperature. The single platinum atom holds the carbon monoxide in place
An international collaboration with participation of the University of Bern has demonstrated for the first time in an interference experiment that antimatter particles also behave as waves besides having particle properties. This success paves the way to a new field of investigations of antimatter. Read more: https://www.vbt.io/goto/TdB. Researchers at the University of Akron have developed a new method of synthesizing catalysts from a combination of metals—platinum and nickel—that form octahedral shaped nanoparticles. While scientists have identified this catalyst as one of the most efficient replacements for pure platinum, they have not fully understood why it grows in an octahedral shape. To better understand the growth process, the researchers at the University of Akron collaborated with multiple institutions, including Broo
The unique Australian approach of creating quantum bits from precisely positioned individual atoms in silicon is reaping major rewards, with UNSW Sydney-led scientists showing for the first time that they can make two of these atom qubits “talk” to each other. The team, led by Professor Michelle Simmons, is the only group in the world that has the ability to see the exact position of their qubits in the solid state. Due to this and other advancements, UNSW scientists and engineers at CQC2T are l
An x-ray imaging technique developed at Brookhaven Lab's National Synchrotron Light Source II could help scientists understand—and ultimately control—the magnetic structure of promising materials for the development of electronic devices that exploit electron spin. The sun’s solar wind affects nearly everything in the solar system. It can disrupt the function of Earth’s satellites and creates the lights of the auroras. A new study by University of Wisconsin–Madison physicists mimicked solar winds in the lab, confirming how they develop and providing an Earth-bound model for the future study of solar physics. A new experimental station (beamline) has begun operations at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II)—a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility at DOE’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. Called the Beamline for Materials Measurement (BMM), it offers scientists state-of-the-art technology for using a classic synchrotron technique: x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Modern atomic clocks are the most accurate measurement tools currently available. The best current instruments deviate by just one second in 30 billion years. However, even this extraordinary level of precision can be improved upon. A clock based on an excited nuclear state of thorium-229 should make it possible to enhance timing accuracy by another order of magnitude. Now a research team led by LMU physicist Peter Thirolf has taken an important step towards such a clock. The researchers report
Lithium, the light silvery metal used in everything from pharmaceutical applications to batteries that power your smart phone or electric car, could also help harness on Earth the fusion energy that lights the sun and stars. Lithium can maintain the heat and protect the walls inside doughnut-shaped tokamaks that house fusion reactions, and will be used to produce tritium, the hydrogen isotope that will combine with its cousin deuterium to fuel fusion in future reactors. At the Princeton Plasma P
Physicists at Argonne National Laboratory are using a unique atom-counting technique called Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA) to selectively capture and count rare krypton isotopes to determine the age of ice and groundwater. The results provide valuable information about the dynamics, flow rates and direction of water in aquifers, particularly those vital to arid regions. It takes a lot of work to achieve near-nothingness, and the beam pipes within particle accelerators are some of the emptiest regions in the universe. They are evacuated so as to prevent the accelerating particles from colliding with gas molecules in their path. The extreme vacuums inside these pipes are achieved by pumping out all the gasses within them and then coating their insides with layers of a special material called a “getter” to which stray molecules stick. A team from CERN’s vacuum gro
A global team of scientists has found that the same instruments used in the discovery of gravitational waves could help unlock the secrets of dark matter. The nature of dark matter remains unknown, but scientists estimate that it is five times as abundant as ordinary matter throughout the universe and that certain types of dark matter are thought to form giant rotating clouds around black holes. Depending on the mass of these hypothetical particles, the gravitational waves emitted by the “black
A study led in part by physicists at the Indiana University Center for the Exploration of Energy and Matter could provide new insight into the composition of the universe immediately after the Big Bang -- as well as improve calculations used to predict the life span of stars and describe the rules that govern the subatomic world. When a pair of mid-October press releases summarized a stride of more than two orders of magnitude in precisely measuring antiproton magnetic moment, journalists worldwide zeroed in on one startling statement: “All of our observations find a complete symmetry between matter and antimatter, which is why the universe should not actually exist.” Sensationalized news headlines read, “’It should NOT EXIST’ Hadron Collider scientists fear universe could DIE at any moment” and news organizations report
