In 1958 Picasso did a large mural for the new headquarters of UNESCO in Paris. The painting, which soon came to be called The Fall of Icarus, has always existed in the shadow of Picasso's previous epic presentation of 20th-century violence in Guernica. Writers on art have not known what to make of it.
