P/O Andrew B "Andy" Mamedoff of No 609 Squadron RAF places his right leg through the gaping hole in the starboard elevator of Spitfire Mk I PR-A at RAF Warmwell on 24 August 1940. His section had been bounced over Ryde earlier the day, when a cannon shell had entered the rear fuselage, taking out the wireless set and almost penetrating the seat back armour. Another had shredded part of the tailplane, whilst machine gun rounds peppered the fuselage, wings and propeller.

Original wartime caption: Flight Lieutenant Bruce Buckham, DFC., of Sydney, Australia, pilot of the R.A.F. Film Unit cine-Lancaster from an Australian squadron, which filmed the "Tirpitz" during Sunday's attack. During the course of the filming, Flight Lieutenant Buckham took the Lancaster down to about 5000 ft. for a last few pictures.
