When it was built as a Ramada in 1968, the Colony Plaza was the first hotel in Orlando to be granted a license to serve liquor on Sundays. The property acted as a headquarters for Disney officials prior to the opening of Walt Disney World, including press events in anticipation of the park's opening. When Disney started building its own hotels to serve its guests, the Colony Plaza began to decline, changing owners many times and eventually becoming the Colony Plaza Condominium Complex.
