Just Type is a modern reinterpretation of classic playing card design and a tribute to the different ways in which the spirit of type can be modified. Paula Scher, a titan of the graphic design world, has helped to redefine modern typography. Working with fellow Pentagram designers Jeff Close and Kristin Huber, Scher has playfully deconstructed the classic french design of traditional “playing cards” and removed all extraneous elements. All that’s left is Just Type. Printed by the US Playing Card Company on premium card stock and housed inside a letterpress-printed tuck box.

There is something extremely satisfying about minimalism, and not just from an aesthetic perspective either. The clean, free feeling that comes with a life devoid of excess and clutter is also good for our mental health, giving us space to breathe and concentrate on things more important and fulfilling than the acquisition of material goods.

The first deck of playing cards was invented in China sometime during the 9th century. A lot has changed since that time. The number of cards, the suits, and the appearance of the cards to name just a few things. One thing that hasn't changed is the popularity of playing cards among the masses. More than 100 million decks of playing cards are created each year. Billions of card games are played every year. This post showcases some of the coolest decks of playing cards in existence.
All of these prints are textured versions of the traditional playing cards. What would otherwise simply be a solid color has been given detail characteristic of the Medieval Ages. Within each card are also graphic elements that make it appear 3-Dimensional, as though the head for example is physically on top of the checkered background. This adds a level of depth to an otherwise very familiar image. When someone looks at these for the first time, they are instinctively drawn by the differences between what they see and what they are accustomed to seeing. The Black & White versions have even more subtle enhancements. Apart from the intense contrast in shades, certain areas of the prints have a slight gradient from light to dark. This gives an additional level of detail that I think you will find appealing. All of my prints come un-framed. However, the sizes are standard for ease of framing. The paper is what truly separates these prints from the masses. It is thick, enhanced matte 13mil paper. You will not be disappointed. Please reach out to me directly if you have any questions, comments, or issues. Thank you, Glenn

Cat lover or not, we all know that our feline friends have personalities as individual and well-defined as yours or mine. (If you need any more evidence for this, just think about the universal appeal of Grumpy Cat.) California artist John Littleboy, the creative guru behind the wildly popular Pack of Dogs playing cards, knows this only too well and has captured the many shades of feline feeling in his Kitten Club playing cards.
