Trailblazing ceramicist and potter extraordinaire, Edith Heath (1911 – 2005) was hugely influential in defining the looks and shape of mid-century modernism. This girl from a Iowa fell in love with art while enrolled at Chicago Teachers College. After a move to San Francisco with her husband, she was introduced to ceramics in her thirties at the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1948 she founded Heath Ceramics focusing on simple, minimalist tabletop and tile designs underpinned by an innovative use of glazes and clay. Her legacy lives on thanks to Robin Petravic and Catherine Bailey who bought Heath Ceramics in 2003. They have done a fabulous job of paying homage to her legacy and celebrating the history of their business while continuing to innovate and create.
