Help your students practice the correct usage of some commonly misused words with this bundle of grammar ppts and printables that I designed to help my own kids with their mechanics. Included are four powerpoints, a set of four worksheets (with keys), and four reference sheets sized for your students’ journals that address language standards from the Common Core State Standards for ELA. [NOTE: This bundle includes materials available separately. If you purchased any of the Grammar PPT + Printables sets linked below, then you already have some of these activities.] Using Articles A, An, & The Grammar PPT + Printables Using Their, They're, & There Grammar PPT + Printables Using Are & Our Grammar PPT + Printables Using Two, Too, & To Grammar PPT + Printables Common Core Standards addressed – • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. (L.3.1, L.4.1, L.5.1) • Correctly use frequently confused words (e.g., to, too, two; there, their) (L.4.1g) The ppts and printables in this bundles will help you address usage of: 1) articles “a”, “an” and “the” 2) “our” & “are” 3) “they’re”, “their”, & “there” 4) “two”, “too”, and “to”. This activity set includes: • four different interactive powerpoints (two with 13 slides, two with 14 slides) • four half-page student journal inserts describing the correct usage of articles and specific homonyms • four printable student worksheets (fill-in-the-blank) • four electronic student worksheets (with pull-down menus) • answer keys for all worksheets Use the powerpoints to introduce the usage of the focus words. The first slide of each ppt describes the usage of the words, and the final slide reviews how to use the three words. The 10 middle slides present students with three sentences, identified as A, B, and C, and students identify the sentence that shows correct (or incorrect) usage. You can have students work in pairs, small groups, or on their own, and they can show their answers on small dry erase boards, using index cards labeled with the answers A, B, and C, or any other method of all pupil response that you use in your classroom. The majority of the text and graphics are timed to appear; the "notes" section of the slides contains specific details about the animations in each slide. After the powerpoint, have your students glue the corresponding half-sheet journal insert in their language arts journal as a handy reference when writing. Wrap everything up with the included worksheets, provided to give your students with more practice using the focus words. There are a printable version in which students will fill in blanks with the proper word. There is also an electronic version of the worksheet – a Word document formatted to provide students with pull-down menus for each blank. [If you have access to a computer lab, the electronic version is an easy way to prepare your students for computer-based assessments!] When the students have completed each worksheet – written as the beginning of a narrative –, have them continue the story on their own for applied practice with the focus words. Hope your kids enjoy the activities as much as mine did! Dennis McDonald
