Seinen Namen hat er einem österreichischem Offizier zu verdanken. Egon Rudolf, Konstrukteur und später Werksdirektor der Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG, erinnert sich: "Es war bei Erprobungsfahrten mit dem Bundesheer am Schöckel, als ein Offizier aus dem Auto sprang und freudig rief: Der geht ja wie ein Haflinger!" Die Geburtsstunde schlug dann ein gutes Jahr später auf der Frankfurter IAA, wo der kleine Offroader 1959 erstmals der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert wurde. Vor allem die Militärs aus aller Welt zeigten Interesse am Haflinger. Seine Wendigkeit, das geringe Gewicht (600 kg!) und die schieren Kletterqualitäten machten den mit einem Zweizylinder-Boxermotor bestückten Geländewagen-Zwerg einzigartig. Jenseits der Baumgrenze konnte dem von Erich Ledwinka entwickelten Extrem-Kraxler kein anderes Auto folgen. Von 1959 bis 1974 wurden in Graz 16.647 Haflinger gebaut, die in 110 Länder exportiert wurden. Allein das Schweizer Militär kaufte 4535 Stück. Sein Einsatzspektrum kannte keine Grenzen: Er löschte Brände, kehrte Straßen, durchquerte Wüsten und erklomm in den Anden 5.680 m hohe Gipfel. Heute ist der Haflinger, der anfangs 35.000 österreichische Schilling kostete, ein begehrtes Sammelobjekt. Sein bestand wird weltweit auf rund 1000 Stück geschätzt, die in zahlreichen Clubs gepflegt werden. [Quelle: G.
