Happy New Year to you all!! Hi it's Abigail from cut&alter here and I am so excited to be the Hive Mama of Hive 8 and to be Queen Bee for January. My block choice this year was never in doubt - I am requesting the same block I asked for last year. I was so happy with my choice and the blocks I received last year that I wanted to make the quilt bigger. I thought I would make up some more blocks but for me the beauty of the block is all the different fabrics that go into it and I just don't have enough variety. So this is where Hive 8 this year can help out ...... I would love a block like this: I first saw it in a local quilt shop where it was called Kisses and Crosses, but have since seen it on the Stash Bee referencing Lori Holt's Cross Roads Block. Whatever it's called I loved the look of this quilt, which is a Stash Bee finish from last year (and Cyndi was a Hive Fiver too!). Fabric requirements: - 8 squares of low volume fabric cut to 4 1/2" This was my initial choice for the low volume squares, but I ended up swapping the square with the X on it for a white on white print. Whilst it looked OK, when I turned the photo to B&W on the camera it read as mid volume and was just too dark. - 48 squares of scrap fabric cut to 2 1/2" I really want a colourful scrappy quilt so really anything goes .... apart from brown please! As you can see on my example I have used almost 48 different fabrics (there are a couple of repeats). If you can do that it would be great but if you don't have a scrap stash like that then don't worry and repeat fabric but please try to keep it away from each other. Instructions: Sew 4 small squares together into a 4 patch Iron seams to one side and interlock seams when joining rows This block will measure 4 1/2" square Make 4 and set aside Take 16 small squares and mark the diagonal line on the back Place 2 small squares in opposite corners of the large square Sew along the line - I find that I get a better finish when I sew a needle's width to the outside of the line Press to set the seam and then iron open Trim the excess fabric away This block will measure 4 1/2" square Make 8 blocks like this Take 2 triangle blocks and join together matching the seams Press seam open This block will measure 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" Make 4 blocks like this Using the remaining 16 small squares make four 4 patches and then join together to make a 16 patch Lay out as a 9 patch formation - ensuring triangle blocks are facing the correct way Join together as rows Press seams in the direction shown by the arrow below Join top and bottom rows to centre row Press seams in the direction shown by the arrow below And that's it!! I do have another request ...... I was wondering if you would all be happy to make a signature block for me to piece into the back? It would be a lovely reminder of all my wonderful Hive mates. I have made an example which fits with the front very well (!), which you can see below, but you could do your own thing if you want. It just needs to have you name and location on it. Here's a shot of some of the blocks I received last year .... .... and I truly, madly, deeply love this quilt!! This quilt is now called Noughts and Crosses, the name my daughter gave it when she saw these blocks on my design wall! Any questions please do ask and I am so looking forward to receiving your lovely blocks! Thank you very much in advance. x

I love red and white quilts and have often shown some of the ones i have made here on my blog...... ........until now i have never made a lone star quilt even though i have always admired them..... ......now i've begun one using kona solid fabrics in tomato and white.......this design is english paper pieced...sometimes i use a glue pen to cover the paper diamonds with fabric, but if it runs out and i can't find the refill quickly i revert to the old fashioned way of tacking the fabric round the paper with needle and thread.....i can do this very quickly now after decades of practice ;)............. ....here are two of my older quilts (floating four patch and simple squares) on the new quilt ladder...lots of people asked about this so for those who were wondering it is actually marketed as a towel ladder and i got it from *next home*.......i find it just right for holding folded quilts :)..... ..........one of my favourite quilts has to be one made from simple squares and i am very fond of the quilt below and use it a lot.............. ...............part of my latest red and white quilt crush must surely be due to reading this fantastic book about the most wonderful exhibition of red and white quilts presented by the american folk art museum..........the photos of the exhibition are absolutely stunning, the actual presentation was a work of art too....there were hundreds of red and white quilts on display including several beautiful lone star examples.....and probably the most exciting one of all is the kaledeiscope quilt shown on the front cover here...... ............but back to my simple squares now and here is a view of the quilt spread out on the bed with a couple of little bears nearby too................ .................the little bear pattern is from my new book modern vintage gifts, if you would like to make one (or two) the same....... ..................besides reading and sewing over the past week i have been enjoying visiting my younger girl and her family and playing with baby rhys, enjoying a family fireworks party with my elder girl and her family with toasted marshmallows on the mini bonfire and daisy wearing her 'ear muffins' because she doesn't like loud fireworks, and enjoying watching charlie celebrate his 8th birthday, plus a neighbourhood bonfire party with fireworks and a potluck party afterwards........... ..............i made a few little cakes to take to my dearies........... .................i had some red roses in my sewing room last week, and here is the candy cane red and white striped binding ready to sew on a tiny quilt...more about that one coming soon :)............ ................of course i make lots of other things in red and white, besides quilts, including this flower pot pillow which is also in my new book, along with the little bedtime mouse seen here having a ride in the tiny pram.............. .........thank you so much for visiting me here in my crafty little blog space dear readers, and for your kind comments too.........i hope you are enjoying happy crafty times and keeping cosy on these november days...................back soon xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxoooooooooooxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Everyone, Here is the first of the blocks for our big push to get finished with our quilt this month. I Was literally buried under fabric last month and unable to get even 5 minutes to get these tutorials done. I have had the blocks finished the video filmed since the middle of August. Speaking of Video. I am not posting it with this block. This is a super easy block and I am pretty certain you can do this one without the video. I do have video for it and it will be posted with the next post. The video incorporates all of the last 4 blocks. If you are using the Cricut Maker to cut your blocks you can find the cut files for this block here. Happy Friday everyone, and welcome to my stop on the "Late for a Date" blog hop. The blog hop is featuring the Wonderland fabrics designed by Josephine Kimberling for Blend Fabrics (you can see more of the fabrics here.) Update: This pattern is now available in my shop as the Make Believe quilt pattern. Shops can order through distributors. Read more about the Make Believe pattern here. This fun fabric line is inspired by the world of Alice in Wonderland - with cards, clocks, teacups and more. You know, my one and only experience with Alice in Wonderland is the old Disney cartoon from waaay back in uh, like 1951. Oh, and I've ridden the (slightly strange) Alice in Wonderland ride at Disneyland. I think maybe it's time I get around to reading the book, do you? Have you read the book? I'm hoping it's better than the movie. When I first designed this quilt, I imagined it with a white background. But the Wonderland fabrics just didn't "pop" enough. So I next tried a solid black and got the result I wanted. I always find it interesting to see how a quilt changes just with a change of background. So if you're working on a quilt and you just don't love it, try swapping out the background for another color, or maybe for a print (like swiss dots, or a linen-look print). And now are you ready for the giveaway? I'll be giving away this stack of fat quarters - simply leave a comment below telling me your favorite character in Alice in Wonderland. I'll randomly choose a winner and announce it here next Friday, October 14th. Giveaway now closed - thank you! There's only one more week left on the blog hop! You can find links to the past posts and projects below. And you can find the Wonderland fabrics here at the Fat Quarter Shop very soon!
