총각김치를 아시나요? Do you know 총각김치[chonggak kimchi], young radish kimchi? This is one of the popular kimchi series in Korea. The meaning of 총각[chong gak] is bachelor or unmarried man. In Korean dictionary, 총각이란, 상투를 틀지 않고 머리를 땋아서 묶은 결혼하지 않은 성년 남자'를 뜻하는 의미. In old Korean culture, married man do hair up in the 상투[sangtu], topknot. Unmarried man braid up their long hair like modern woman's hair. This young radish take after unmarried man's hair style, braid hair. That's why its name became 총각김치(chonggak kimchi). This is what I know of the origine of this name. Another name of 총각김치 is 알타리김치[altari kimchi], but I don't know where its name came from. This kimchi is so good with rice or ramyeon.
