Denton Cycles TI Raleigh UK Team Bike G4582 'D R' Dave Rollinson 1972 MKIV Professional - New Arrival
As the 2013 Tour de France braces itself for Stage 8, the first battle with an HC peak—scaling the Col de Pailhères—it’s sobering to remember these feats of climbing weren’t always performed upon ultra-light carbon bikes with electronic shifting. The 1980 Tour was won by Joop Zoetemelk on a Raleigh Team Professional like this one,…

"Red and yellow, kill a fellow..." Maybe that's why I love these old Team Raleigh track bikes? There's something venomous about them. Like some predatory beast, I loved looking at the old photos of British steel eating their competition alive on the boards. The last time I was in Melbourne, I shot another Northside Wheelers in-store display, classic racing track machine, that bright red Cecil Walker. They're both the same owner, with an impeccable taste for steel race machines. This one's a keeper! See more for yourself in the Gallery!

Bikes do not get more original than this! Original owner, original paint and original components. After a 500 mile round trip, SB1861 is on the workbench. SB1861 dates to late 1977/early 1978 (there will be more on the date in the next post); it is built from Reynolds 531 Double Butted tubing with all the […]
If you were watching the Tour de France on ITV4 and wondering what presenter Paul Sherwen looked like in his racing days, here he is. Riding the 1983 Milan-San Remo classic, Paul looks like he's had a hard day. At 294 kms., it 's a long, long way. Paul finished 3-16 down on winner Giuseppe Saronni (Del Tongo-Colnago), who finished 44 seconds before the second man (Guido Bontempi), but just to finish this race is a victory in itself. No sunglasses, helmet, computer, earpiece, or even track mitts, Paul looks positively minimalist. Incidentally, the winner's time was 7hrs 7min. 59sec. Who thinks professional cyclists don't earn their money? This photo is from the long departed magazine Cyclist Monthly. Paul died in 2018 at the age 62. He had ridden seven Tour de France races and finished five.

It’s been a while since I’ve written anything about this bike. SB4059 is my original bike, number #1 in the collection, the bike that started the blog and the search for SBDU knowledge! One day I hope to say SB4059 is finally finished and today, it takes one step closer. This build started in December […]

Part two of the build for SB3800, a 1980 TI-Raleigh Team Pro 753; I don’t know if I prefer the first part of a build when the grease and dirt is involved, or the second part when you get down to the detailing. I like both parts but for me, it is all about the […]

What would you consider rare about the Specialist Bicycle Development Unit (SBDU)? I’ve heard people say that SBDU Reynolds 753 frames are rare… are they, or is that just perception? Defining something as rare really has to be done carefully, and in relation to the context of the subject. The way things are perceived is […]
