This is a list of some of nature's creations that simply defy human imagination. Unlike the Little Known Prehistoric Monster lists, this one depicts only species that are alive today. They may not be as big or scary, but these creatures are certainly fantastic and deserve more attention than they usually get.

When it comes to portraiture, for the most part, 85mm is the traditional choice, with focal lengths around that number also seen as alternatives, such as 50mm, 100mm, and 135mm. 35mm is often used for portraiture, though it is rarely thought of as a primary option, being just a little wide for closer shots. Nonetheless, one well-known portrait photographer actually prefers
He is Macedonian, a rarely seen example of this genre. She is Croatian & Kimport named her Laizka. Dressed by Balkan refugee women, through the Near East Industries Foundation, these two cloth darlings are each about 8" in height and they wear folkcostume variations reflecting their heritage. Styles such as that of Laizka, could indicate an origin in the Pannonian ethnographic region of Croatia, such as Gračani around Zagreb. Not suprisingly, the use of red & yellow, colors to drive away evil spirits are also known in the Herzegovina costume. In the early 20th century, styles from the Bosanski Šamac area were similar, tho, with much heavier aprons. While Laizka wears a coat for warmth, little Macedonian boy is dressed for warm weather. At first glance, one might think that he wears the fustanella, the national costume of both Greece & Albania. Not so. His dress reflects a local variation of the basic form for the Macedonian male. In life, linen pants, narrow at the calf would be tucked into knitted stockings. The actual shirt is long, full at the bottom and held in place with a sash, often then covered by a leather belt. He shows his working class background, with light soiling to his clothes & a lost button from his red leather opanci, both attributed to his age & pictured above. Likewise, Laizka has mild age discoloration & faint color run on her pale yellow jacket. Despite these imperfections, these two make quite the pair with their rose colored cheeks. Gervais' is the beaked whale most commonly found stranded along the North American Atlantic coast, yet typically, it is rarely seen at sea, and very little is known about it. Much of the problem stems from their absolute refusal to keep still while observers measure their teeth. My version has no problem keeping still to be admired! Carved from rescued hardwood, stained, painted, and protected with several coats of clear acrylic, he is mounted via dowel to a nice oak base. He measures about 9" long and 6-1/4" high by 4" wide at the pectorals. He boasts lots of dueling scars and bites from cookie-cutter sharks, along with being initialed and dated by yours truly. With his graceful lines and dignified coloring, this sculpture would look wonderful pretty much anywhere.
