File for the Post: Relations and Functions Card Sort This lesson was created for a mandatory tutorial session for Algebra 1 students. I was in charge of creating a 30 minute review lesson over "Relations and Functions." This lesson had to include a 5-10 minute review lesson and an activity. First, students went over this graphic organizer with four practice problems to review relations and functions. After students reviewed relations and functions, they independently completed the following cut and paste activity. If you read my blog, then you know all about my love for card sorts! Students had to match up the correct table, graph, map, and ordered pairs together and determine if the relation was a function. If you download the activity, then you will notice that there is a separate document that does not require cutting (if you do not have the time). Sorry for the short and sweet post, I just had several teachers ask for the cut and pasted document.
This post is kind of a photo dump of an idea for a functions foldable. The foldable is a free download from TPT and you can find it here. At the top of the page the definitions for function and relation are written out. I think it’s important for students to see mathematical definitions often. Underneath that, is a foldable jam packed with informations about finding the domain and range of functions from graphs, ordered pairs, a table, and a mapping.
Relations and Functions between any two entities give us the link between them. In mathematics obtain a precise correspondence between any two entities.

This well-organized book was designed to introduce students to a way of thinking that encourages precision and accuracy. As the text for a course in modern logic, it familiarizes readers with a complete theory of logical inference and its specific applications to mathematics and the empirical sciences. Part I deals with formal principles of inference and definition, including a detailed attempt to relate the formal theory of inference to the standard informal proofs common throughout mathematics. An in-depth exploration of elementary intuitive set theory constitutes Part II, with separate chapters on sets, relations, and functions. The final section deals with the set-theoretical foundations of the axiomatic method and contains, in both the discussion and exercises, numerous examples of axiomatically formulated theories. Topics range from the theory of groups and the algebra of the real numbers to elementary probability theory, classical particle mechanics, and the theory of measurement of sensation intensities. Ideally suited for undergraduate courses, this text requires no background in mathematics or philosophy.

Function or Not a Function Cut Out Activity This resource contains 4 relations and students need to determine whether the given relation represents a function or not a function. Students will see the relation represented in four forms: given as a table, a graph, a mapping diagram, and a set of ordered pairs. Students will justify why the relation is a function by explaining either that it passes the vertical line test or that none of the x-values repeat. Students will cut out all 16 boxes, and then glue them in the appropriate location. Students will then explain whether the relation represents a function or not a function and explain WHY. This resource could even be used as a graphic organizer by simply printing the answer key for students to use as a way to study. Answer Key and Detailed Solutions Included. NO PREP NEEDED. Please leave feedback.
