I've never really been a fan of teaching writing, but I always really dreaded when it was time to teach informative writing. Even as a student, research projects were the worst! As a teacher, I especially hated when it was time for research projects to begin. For me, the topic was always too big and I didn't know where to start. I had a hard time staying on topic. I never really knew when it was time to be done researching and time to begin writing. I found that a lot of my students were having the same issues and knew there needed to be a better way. Guided research projects help teachers teach the resarch process to students. They basically lay it all out so students can work independently, leaving you to help the students that need it the most. With essential questions to guide your students and keep them on topic, your students will be able to compose a thoroughly written research paper and create a detailed presentation using PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Keynote. Every guided research project comes with information for parents that includes due dates, a timeline and checklist for students, and an overview of the essential questions for the research paper. Here is what separates guided research projects from other research projects! The guided notes packet breaks down the main topic into subtopics. Each subtopic is then broken down even more with essential questions to guide your students and their research. You'll be amazed by how thorough your students will be with their research. Even my struggling writers were able to compose high quality papers with many details! After your students have completed their research and written their papers, they can move on to their presentation. This mini-research project is designed to be fun and meaningful! Students will research a person, place, animal, or event and display their research in a picture frame. The picture frame will include a picture (either sketched or printed) of their topic. Then, students’ research will slide into the picture frame’s pocket. There are research project templates, research graphic organizers, and research materials for every aspect of the project included. This project is designed for 5-7 class periods. About the Mini-Research Project: During this mini-research project, students will research a person, place, animal, or event. The topics that students research can be pre-determined by you, developed as a class, or completely selected by students. As students develop their projects, they will learn about conducting research, validating sources, taking notes, and compiling their research. Guided questions are included to help students conduct targeted research. Students will compile their research and prepare it for a 3-D picture frame with a pocket. Students will write their research on a custom page that they’ll be able to slip inside the pocket of a paper picture frame that students create and customize. They’ll design their picture frame with a sketch or printed picture of their research topic. The end result is an impressive 3-dimensional picture frame of their research. Their research is tucked inside the frame to make it interactive and fun! Through reading, research, and creativity students will develop critical ELA skills! These 3-D research projects are perfect for: Displaying during Open House or Parent Information Night! Integrating with other subjects. For instance, students could research important events during the Revolutionary War to connect with their U.S. History curriculum. Practicing public speaking skills – Students can share out their research and projects with the entire class. Celebrating a community of learners. Set up Jigsaw Learning Groups where students share and swap research topics to deepen their understanding of more research topics.
