"I think it is necessary to internalize the spirit of wabi-sabi in order to carry out this project. It will be possible to do this with a minimalist approach without unnecessary details. Since I wanted to create a minimalist house, there were parts that I had difficulty designing. I took great care in the use of materials to reflect the wabi-sabi style in the best way possible. I avoided the use of unnecessary items."

Hannah Flowers is a self-taught artist, born 1989 in Tasmania, Australia, and currently residing in Scotland, United Kingdom. She lives in a small cottage by the forest and sea where she can draw inspiration from the nature surrounding her. Working in oils using the indirect methods of the renaissance she is fascinated by depicting beauty, both real and imagined. Often using grotesque or humorous undertones and hidden details to add dimension to the narratives she weaves. Hannah is a firm believer in art for arts sake- not feeling the need to imbue her work with any moral or current event commentary, but rather creating a unique atmosphere for the viewer to enjoy. She draws inspiration from many different time periods and styles, leaving her paintings with a sense of being just outside of time and place.

The house was built for two families in Austin and therefore is split into two living areas. The house consists of two pavilions connected by a glass hallway. The design was greatly influenced by different regions and cultures. Both the use of the roof as an outdoor living space and the shading devices are derived from Moorish architecture. The body of water and the spatial continuity between inside and outside was inspired by Asian architecture. while the structural transparency of the volumes and the minimalist aspect of the interior was derived from Japanese pavilions. The house is constructed of a modular steel frame. The frame is infilled with prefab thermasteel panels to minimize construction on-site waste. The structural frame is exposed, showing the construction process and articulating the house’s facades. The repetitive modular method, as well as the prefabrication allowed for greater efficiency during construction. …In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back. - quote by Albert Camus None of these pictures...
